So I’ve seen this weird gunk in her eye three times now.  The first time, about a month ago, I noticed it when I was busy doing something, and by the time I was able to catch her and get a closer look, it had disappeared.  I saw it again on Sunday when my boyfriend was over, and we both checked it out and tried to figure out what it was.  We decided it was just some sort of sleep or something in her eye, but today, the same exact thing was there!  It’s always the same shape, and it just floats on top of her eye.  I’ve removed it (carefully!) the last two times, but something just doesn’t seem right.  Does anyone know what this is?  It’s starting to scare me, now that I’ve seen it three times, and her vet is on vacation for another week!  (Sorry she’s upside down- can’t figure out how to move the pic)

Have you actually removed it each time? Bunnies do have a third eyelid on the inside corner like that. I often see Hannah’s when she’s relaxed and I’m petting her.

          Here’s a decent pic: http://www.ur.umich.edu/9798/Nov26_97/eye2.jpg

I don’t think it’s her third eyelid, because it moves around when she blinks- it travels all over her eyeball! When I noticed it today, it was smack in the middle of her eye. It’s a little chunk of something gooey- after I took it out, I got a better look at it, and it’s just a flat-ish gray squishy thing.

It looks like what would come out of Wooly’s eye when his third eyelid was inflamed. It was like a “scab” of goo that would form while he was sleeping and then it would get blinked out when he was messing with his eye. Maybe Bailey hurt her eye or third eyelid and that is what it is because her body is trying to heal it? I don’t know.

That looks like something my rabbit occasionally gets in his eye. It seems to move around for a couple of days and then bunny seems to groom it out. The first time it happened, I took him to the vet immediately. While we were in the exam room waiting for the vet, bunny rubbed it out of his eye and there was nothing for the vet to see. When I described it the vet told me what he thought it was, unfortunately I do not remember exactly. The vet did say do not worry immediately, but if it does not work its way out in a couple of days to bring him in.

If it’s gooey and not attached to her eye, there’s a good chance her eye is just kind of irritated with who knows what. Keep an eye (hah) on it and take her to the vet if things don’t start looking up in a few days!

Thanks, everyone! LB and Bumblebunny, you’re describing what sounds like the same thing that Bailey has. I’ll keep watching her. Hopefully it’s just some minor irritation that she can flush out on her own. She doesn’t seem to be acting differently, so I hope it’s not bothering her. I’m still going to call the vet when she’s back from vacation, just for peace of mind, and to see if eye drops or something might help her.

Something is causing her eye to produce that much gunk- if it continues she should be seen to make sure there are no injuries to the eye. But if it is something that rarely happens and does not reoccur if you clean the eye- then she should be fine.

I just took Kate the vet with this exact issue about a month and half ago. So long as it’s not yellowish (like it’s infected) it shouldn’t be an emergency. I’d get it checked out sometime though. It’s hard to tell sometimes if it’s recurring just because they can be cleaning it out before you know that it’s there. In Kate’s case, it turns out she had a scratch on her eye sometime in the past (before I adopted her) and her third eyelid had grown over it, causing a constant gunk producing irritation. According the vet, it’s something that might need surgery in the future, but so long as she and Spencer keep her cleaned out she shouldn’t.

I just got back from work, and sure enough, it’s there again. I called the vet’s office, and the tech said it sounds like she’ll need to be seen by the vet. Oh darn- I was really hoping to go a month without a vet visit!

It looks exactly like what Sammy gets in her eye, and fairly frequently. (Once every several months I’d say.) My vet saw it, was able to get it out and examine it and said it was nothing to worry about, to just be very gentle when helping to remove it. It was not the 3rd eyelid. Now if it’s white and translucent (not yellow) and goopy like a large sleepy or booger, and it comes out easily, that’s probably the same thing. Definitely have your vet examine it and her this time. But don’t be surprised if there’s nothing wrong and no treatment. But until it’s seen, you can’t be sure.

Sammy always gives me a run to catch her to get it out, and kisses once I succeed.

Hey guys, Meg gets that in her eyes all the time. I was reading online sometime ago that it’s just an excessive amount of protein that is secreted through their lacrimal glands. Not something to be concerned about. I always remove it too with a tiny piece of papertowel that I stick to it and it comes out easily. Never seems to bother her, but i always feel like I have to remove it so she can see better

My vet said that Bailey’s just fine, and that most likely, she just has something irritating her eye. She prescribed flushing it with a saline solution, which should get the irritant out, then watching to see if the stuff comes back. She did say that since it’s not yellow, she’s not concerned about it being an infection, so that’s good news. We also got to chat about Logan’s allergies, so that was helpful too! I feel much better now Thanks everyone for the help and advice! Bailey says thanks, too

Meadow had that one time! Just once, it was a very odd thing. I looked at her and it seemed like half her eye was covered up. I was able to gently remove it and it never happened again.
