On Wednesday night I noticed Jersey was holding her right leg funny. I had just picked her up and she jumps from my arms onto the set of drawers. I normally crouch down so she can hop onto it easily. We’ve done this countless times but I think this is when she was hurt because I don’t remember seeing anything amiss before that.

She seemed ok though, hopped down and started eating and this is when I noticed it. Her leg looked short. I thought maybe it was dislocated. Anyway, I took her to the vet Thursday morning and she checked her over for breaks and concluded it’s likely a soft tissue injury.  She gave her an anti-inflammatory with pain killer (rimadyl & carprieve).

Jersey has been managing fine and has continued eating thankfully. Today I noticed she seems a bit more sensitive and wonder if this sort of injury can worsen before it improves?  I didn’t think to ask how long the pain reliever would last and what to expect in the coming days.  Anyone dealt with something similar?   Would the muscle sort of become stiff and more tender?

It’s weird, she sort of paws the air like she can’t put it down, but when sitting still, she can rest it on the ground though she doesn’t bare weight on it. It’s looks pretty sad yet she is acting her normal self which helps me not feel so bad for her.

I’m sorry to hear that. Poor Jersey.
First, sending the all important medical treatment provided by BinkyBunny:
          {{{{{{{{{{{{Healing vibes, Jersey!}}}}}}}}}}}}

Ok, now for my question/suggestion. Did the pain killer continue for a while, or did it run out already? Do you know how often she needs it? I’m thinking that she just is still aching from it and could either use some more, or a bit of straight pain killer (like Metacam) and some confinement for overnight to give it a longer rest to heal. Not too long so it doesn’t get stiff from lack of use.
Humans can be noticeably uncomfortable for as long as 10 days, than be better. I suspect that she’s just feeling it, period, until it heals up. That she’s normal in all other ways is excellent. Maybe you need to kiss-it-make-it-better.

Poor Jersey – sending healing vibes her way.

I’m not familiar with caprieve but have used rimadyl a very long time ago so I’m not certain the dosage or frequency of taking these medications.

I imagine it can get more tender – I would suggest as well to confine her a bit to allow it to heal and cause further injury. I would also just double check with the vet about your question as she probably would have a better answer about soft tissue pain.

Poor Jersey! I don’t have any experience with this, but I hope she heals up soon.

Thanks for your good wishes for her.

I’m silly. Sarita, I just looked up Carprieve and found it’s alternative names. “Carprieve” aka “Norocarp” aka “Carprofen” aka “Rimadyl” !

So that is the anti-inflamm + analgesic in one. My bill listed the 2 names so I was thinking it was 2 different meds.

RabbitPam, she had an injection so I don’t have oral meds to give. I’m glad because she’d struggle more and risk injury further. The vet said to watch her for now and if no improvement, we’ll do x-rays to see what’s going on. There’s no improvement but also no deterioation in her behaviour. She ran (awkwardly) for her pellets today.
I wish I could kiss and make it better! As if she’d let me. I feel part responsible though I know it was just bad luck.

I remember, once or twice, i inadvertently leaned my weight on Lash’s (my first bunny) paw when she was on the bed and caught her paw under my elbow or something. She did the same thing, pawed the air with it, flicking it, trying to make the pain go away. I would immediately take the injured paw in my fingers and rub it vigorously between my fingers, the same I do to my knee if I knock it against the bed, as it subdues the pain if you rub it hard. After rubbing it, it would be all better and she could use it again. I’m not suggesting doing this with Jersey as her injury is different, but reading your post reminded me of when Lash’s little paw would be in pain. So, I’m sorry, I’m not of much help here, I just know how sad you feel for her. Sounds like your vet is on top of it, and i too would wonder as you do, whether the injury can get worse before it gets better. You are a good bunny mom and will do what’s best. Jersey’s boo-boo will be in my prayers… HEALING VIBES to Jersey’s injury! Did your vet say anything about putting a pack of frozen peas on it for a bit, or putting her paw on a heating pad, I don’t know if either would be advisable, just wondered. The heating pad would have to have one of those chew-protected cords.

Thank you lashkay. I intinctively rub spots I’ve bumped too. I did massage above the shoulder area and along the spine last night and she seemed to take some comfort. I think your right, it does help some. Directly touching the injured leg is a no-no in her opinion. She’ll just growl at me.
I wondered about ice and heat also, like you would treat a sprain for yourself. Vet never suggested anything though. I always come up with a bunch of questions AFTER I’ve been there!

You can still call your vet and ask, for your own peace of mind. She might say, “You can try such and such…”
My vet, bless her heart, was often suggesting I put Lash on a heating pad for this or that, but I was afraid she’d bite through the electric cord inside it if not the electric cord running off of it, and never tried it.

Viv had a sprained front leg once. She got back to normal in a few days. She healed pretty quickly. But then again, it probably wasn’t that serious.
But I know sprains can take a while to heal. When I took Jack to vet for what we thought was a sprain, one vet said it could take a couple of weeks for it to heal. Later, it was discovered that he had arthritis in his spine and paw.

Did the vet say how long you should wait before you should see any improvement?

                          Get better Jersey!!

I thought she said wait a week? I’m not entirely sure and kicking myself I didn’t write it down. I guess that phone call could clarify it for me. I think I’ll check in Monday with them as it would be 4 days by then and see what they say. Thanks

Aren’t your seasons changing right now too? Getting colder? Perhaps that is enhancing the discomfort for her? I know changes in air pressure make me feel worse or better, depending. You could always get a hot water bottle and put some just warmed water into it for her to lay against…unless she’d tear it up of course.
So the vet just felt her leg, didn’t take an xray? How can they tell it isn’t a cracked bone unless they’ve got a film?
I have to say, I don’t care for rimadyl myself, but I only have experience with it in a dog’s case. I think it’s kind of hard on the stomach, so, odd that your vet would choose that for an animal that needs it’s tummy in top form. We only ever get metacam for bunny pain here.
How far did she jump down? Does she seem to want some kind of hot or cold on the leg? I keep thinking of Binkles’ bun needing to put her paws in the cold water after she’d fallen at the vets, NOT that I think Jersey’s injury is as bad as that, but the method her bun took to try to relieve pain stuck with me…
Plus didn’t Chacha take a wrong leap down onto a couch arm and Brittany was worried about her having hurt her leg recently? She turned out okay, but to be safe Brit kept her in her enclosure for some time after the fall.

When I was a dumb teenager, one of my cats got onto a pile of my clothes and began shredding my nylons. I pushed her off the pile only to have her land on her rear leg wrong and it twisted/sprained and I had to have my cousin run us to the ER vet. Luckily it was only a sprain and not a break, but she never walked right after that…she actually developed what I called her “Marilyn Monroe Swish” because from the back she looked like a lady sashaying down the street in a pair of heels with her toes turned out…lol.

Sending healing vibes to our dear, plucky Jersey! ((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((get better soon and stop worrying your mum!)))))))))))))))))))))))))))))

                                Thanks MM.
I hope it doesn’t effect her stomach. Would that be from continued doses though? She just had the one dose. 0.18mls, she’s almost 5lbs. I have noticed her poops are somewhat hard/dry today and was wondering why. I had forgotten how med going thru their system can effect their poop though usually it can make it loose.
From what I briefly read on this med is it is commonly used for joint conditions/pain. The vet mentioned it was relatively new, maybe meaning to their clinic or use in Australia (???)

The vet feel her over from each toe upwards then did a full extension of her leg. She then let her hop around the room to observe. I sure I wouldn’t know what to feel for if trying to find a break. I did try when it happened but I really didn’t know what to look for.

We sort of have a routine when I carry her. I dip to the same level as the set of drawers and she just hops from me to them. So it’s really only a horizontal jump across. Done it so many times so I don’t know why this time she got hurt. I did have about 5 kids in the house that day (2 of them under age 3) and the buns spent most their time hiding. They were more at risk from curious children the entire day but it was my routine with her that this resulted. That’s life I suppose.

She is travelling along well. I was just wondering what would be the normal healing timeframe I suppose.

A Marilyn Monroe sashay…can you imagine?! Lol Jersey’s such a tomboy, I think her doing that would look most odd.

ps. regarding the weather; yes we are in a change. It’s officially Autumn but yesterday was 88 and today it was raining. Nothing is predictable anymore.

Sometimes with sprains since you can’t tell a pet to restrict their activity it can be beneficial to have them feel some mild discomfort so they do not continue to run and strain the leg. I think, but am not sure- that giving it as an injection would not affect the stomach as much as giving it orally where it sits in the stomach and affects it directly.

Poor Jersey! I hope she feels better soon.

Charlie had a sprained leg once after an awkward (and yes, funny) fall off the back of the couch. I rushed him to the vet where they injected him, checked him over and sent him home with metacam.

I think it took about a week for him to be better on it, but I’m not sure if the metacam helped or hindered cause when I gave it to him, he ran around fine until it wore off, then he was like, “ouch, sore foot mum!”

I just lef thim be mostly, but if it doens’t look like it’s getting better then you’re probably worried for a reason. You know her better than anyone so you know what’s normal or not. I think vets, like doctors, make us feel worried for no reason, but we know our pets so well!

She’s doing well, thank you all. : ) Her leg has come down much more in the last couple days. And she is moving about as if nothing is wrong with it. The vet had said wait the full week which is this Thursday and bring her in if nothing had changed or it had worsened. So she seems to be on track. : )
Lashkay, I forgot to ask about that! I will write it down to ask when ever I’m next there as it would be good to know about that.

She’s still a growly-butt but I don’t think the vet can help me out there. :p

Glad to hear Jersey is doing better. I am also dealing with a bum leg on Mimzy that doesn’t seem to be any better than before his last vet visit, so we may be headed back there again by the end of the month. I don’t know if he’s sprained it or if he’s just going lame at all of 4 years old.
