Just curious as to if rabbits should have a yearly exam.  Any opinions?

Also, the vet I will be using does a free exam for people who have just adopted.  So I’m considering taking Abby in for a wellness visit.  It’s the same vet I used for Hugo and I really like her.  She was a good vet.  Oh boy did they remember me.  They do a fecal test once a year and they suggested doing blood work on her just to make sure she was healthy.  Does this sound like a good idea?

Rabbits should have yearly exams. If it will help to calm you down, knowing what, if anything, is out of whack, then yes, I would definitely recommend having blood work as well.

That’s great that your vet does a free wellness exam. I would definitely take advantage of it.

Thanks. I’ll get her checked out and at least do the fecal test and let this be the start to her yearly exams. As for the blood work, I’m still debating. The vet’s office said it’s stressful on a rabbit to draw blood and the rescue said that there is little they could find on a blood test that would be treatable. It would only cost $67 which I thought was a very reasonable price. So, I’m not sure what to do……

Yes, they definitely do. I would do the bloodwork and it could also be used as a baseline for future problems.

I really recommend blood work. My vet did Riley’s before his neuter, and we found liver problems which we were able to correct by switching his litter – no problems since, but I wouldn’t have known that he was sensitive to pelleted pine litter (which most places say are safe for bunnies) if I hadn’t done bloodwork. And $67 seems like a great deal!

I’m no expert by any means but think it’s a good chance to get a baseline in her health especially if the check up is free.

Thanks for all your thoughts! Her appointment is scheduled Wednesday.

Just curious, the exam does not include the bloodwork and fecal exam does it? Even if it doesn’t, it still well worth doing.

No it doesn’t. They wave the $42 exam fee. The blood work is $67 and the fecal test is $16. So it’s really not that bad.

I’m glad you took her. How’d it go?
I’m a big believer in baseline exams and getting a completely clean bill of health when you start life with a bunny. Especially a bunny coming from, well, anywhere else.
