So I’m pretty new to the whole bunny thing. I’ve done my research though and everything has been going great so far. From what I have read, pretty much everything says that for the first 6 months or so, they are supposed to get unlimited pellets and hay. I have been putting just enough for my bun (Tait, 2 months) to finish in a day. At first this wasn’t that much, but lately it has been quite a bit, and I don’t want to make him overweight. Right now he is getting about 1/4 cup of alfalfa pellets, 2 handfuls of alfalfa hay, and 2 handfuls of oat hay. These are large handfuls. I just wanted to know if this is normal? He is very active, gets at least 2 hours of exercise a day, more like 4 or 5 on an average day though. Oh and he is a netherland dwarf, dutch cross.

        Thanks!

Don’t worry about giving too much hay…hay won’t make a bunny overweight, but is very good for their digestive tracts. It is also a good idea to just have a permanent hay source that you keep stocked, instead of feeding fixed amounts every day. My bunnies eat so much hay that I could swear they are big horses or cows shrunk into little bunny bodies .

Tait’s pellet intake doesn’t sound too bad either…I’d say you’re right on track for his age!

Sounds fine to me. You can never give them enough hay

Thanks so much! I actually don’t feed a fixed amount of food per day. Whenever he is getting low I give more. I was just trying estimate how much he eats per day as a reference

That doesn’t sound like two much – my adults get almost 1/4 cup a day. When Otto was a baby he was eating around 1/2 cup per day (I fed as much as he would eat, generally, but measured it so I could tell if he stopped eating).

And more hay is always a good thing! Bunnies can never eat too much hay.
