urgent help appreciated

The people seemed nice. That classafieds board is getting FLOODED by Easter bunny stuff. Thinking it might get lost in the shuffle I sent her this email:

“Hey there!

I would guess you know this but Spay and Neuter of Salt Lake fixes rabbits for something like 65 dollars. As a poor student, I understand that this might still not be an option. Just wanted to let you know. I’m sure you know this as well, but rabbits are happier in pairs and extremely difficult to bond (one of the benefits of adopting siblings). I would love to see these two stay together (they’re adorable) so I thought I’d just email you real quick. If you can’t get one fixed though, it is obviously BY FAR the better option to adopt one out. The shelters are about to get FLOODED with post-Easter rabbits bought on a whim and stuffed in baskets like plastic eggs. Most of them will probably be euthanized . The last thing shelters need this time of year is more baby bunnies. Anyways, I hope you have a great day. Best of luck resolving your situation!

“thank you brent. im completely heartbroken at the thought of giving up my bunny. they are absolutely adorable together and i cant imagine them being apart. the main reason i was thinking about separating them is because he is ripping out my females hair and leaving sores on her. i dont know if shes in pain or anything and if she is in pain then id feel horrible. if i get him fixed will he stop trying to dominate her?

I have had a female rabbit for a while now. She’s not yet spayed (getting that done this month after classes end most likely), so I don’t personally know how rabbits respond afterwards. Will it probably take him a few a few months to calm down? I have yet to bond rabbits, so I don’t know how that will affect them. I know females sometimes rip out their hair to make nests. Do males sometimes do this to their females? Do you think she is pregnant? I would like some advice quickly as possible so I can respond. I have what I’ve read, but no first hand experience with these sort of things. I have a spare cage I could take up to her to seperate the bunnies until they are treated. This would be a BAD time of year for a surprise littler.

She is most likely already pregnant. Because he is not altered, he is acting like an unaltered rabbit. It really doesn’t sound like they are acting adorable together to me either.

And even siblings CAN fight so adopting them together and they are unaltered is not guarantee they will remain bonded.

I guess too, I don’t really understand what your intentions will be on how you can help her without taking on a rabbit on your own as you cannot afford another rabbit either.

This lady needs to get her rabbits seperated, asap. They cannot be ‘adorable together’ if they are both unfixed, hormonally driven, and just going to multiply. She needs to take their care into consideration.

 No, it doesn’t sound like they’re that adorable together right now. Maybe the hair pulling is just a sometimes thing. When I wrote that I thought the two images were of the two rabbits. Maybe they’re both of the male though. I don’t know exactly what my intentions with helping are. When I first sent that it was late and I thought I read that they were almost four months old. I thought that she might not be pregnant if they were that young (though I know it’s possible).

Also, there are only two spay and neuter places in the state (that I know of, and I did check around) that do the operation for less than 200 dollars. I thought she might just need to be made aware of a cheaper option. My bunny is a single bun. I try to spend about 5-8 hours a day with her (with at least an hour of that being direct attention), but I can tell she still gets so lonely. Every day she treats her stuffed rabbit more an more like its real. She’s resting against it right now . I just didn’t want to see a pair seperated if possible. Sorry I’m being so brief. I have to go into work soon.

Hair pulling isn’t a normal thing. Rabbits are often mix-sexed, so vet care is needed asap to find out what the genders are.

I read on a post a long time ago that there are emergency spays that are done in those cases, but then again, the owner needs to take the rabbits to the vet for a thorough check up.

Equalsign, I have a single rabbit. She’s been single since I bought her home at 8 weeks, and now she is a year and 5 months old. If you can afford another rabbit and have the time, go for it.

Do the testicles appear around six months?
It sounds like they haven’t taken them to a vet, so maybe they are both female and they’re mistaking mounting to
mean the rabbit is male. I’ll email them after work tonight.

I believe testicles descend much earlier, 2 months. I’ve heard earlier, later, in between. it just depends on the bunny.

Never had a teenage boy so I’m not sure but I agree they descend earlier. His best bet is to seperate now-and spay/neuter then reintroduce. I’m suprised-you must have done the right thing in emailing-their response to you was polite and sounded open to hear more! THat’s FANTASTIC! If you can encourage him/her to seperate them-just until they are fixed and settled-perhaps with prodding that the behavior that he/she’s seeing could very likely escalate into real wounds that require pricey vet visits… eh-keep us posted!

Biting and sores sound like he is already trying to mate with her. Male rabbits will very often bite the females back during “the deed”. I am quite sure if she isn’t pregnant, she will be very soon if not separated.

That’s exactly what I was thinking. They’re adorable together but fur is being ripped out and causing sores? Not a good mix… And why would you put any two male/female animals together that aren’t fixed?
