        Odd Question:

We have started using wood stove pellets.  Both buns and bun slaves love them.  I was wondering: are they sold in the summer also?  I am hoping so, because i would rather not stock up. That would be alot of space ( Space I have already allotted to a bale of hay).  Insight from been there done that owners is appreciated.

Most of the time it isn’t thats why I use horse stall bedding ( same thing/ same price only its made for horses and you don’t have to worry about bad chemicals) other wise you can stock up on it. I know some people on her do it but we don’t have the room.

Ok, thanks. Sounds like I need to start clearing a space. Its quite a hall to a supply store that has horse bedding- although maybe I should switch to that and stock up so that I dont have to go far often. Is the price similar to wood stove pellets?

I always stocked up on it before the summer, but last year when I ran out, I called around and found some at my local Fleet Farm. The bags aren’t super big if you have a garage – I kept a stack of them on the floor, and the bag I was using went into a garbage can with a scoop.

They are seasonal where I live, so we stock up once a year. It takes up space, but it’s worth it (to me) saving the money.

I can get a 40lb bag of horse stall bedding for $7 so its about $1 dollar more than wood stove pellets.

yeah, we can’t stock up because we have mice that chew EVERY THING! lol

I’m intrigued about the horse stall bedding. I may have to check out the local farm supply to save myself some money.

Make sure its the pine pellets not the shavings.

I would expect that Equine Pine is available year round in stores that sell it, and Feline Pine (same manufacturer) is definitely available year round in pet and grocery stores. A bit more expensive, but you know that they are safe from added excellerants (sp?) so are fine to use.

thats why I use Horse stall bedding ( Equine pine) because I am so afraid of weird chemicals.

not sure what your asking. Are you wondering if the pellets are pine there safe?

I find I can hardly find them in the winter. I often have to buy yesterdays news instead. Last time I asked at home depot and they told me they’ve never carried them and they are special order only-which is so wrong because I’ve bought them there before…lame…So considering making a special order. And maybe that would be available to you as well.

Sorry about that. I tend to have to phone post a lot when I’m at school and it looks like my phone autocorrected. I was just wondering if equine pine was ok to use. My rescue said no pine or cedar. Is the horse bedding treated differently or manufactured differently than the small animal bedding at the pet stores. I hope that makes more sense now.

Pine in pelleted form is safe because of how it is processed – the dangerous phenols are no longer present like they are in pine shavings.

Great thanks for the info. I wonder I that would work for my dads pot belly too. He currently uses yesterday’s news cat litter and this would possibly save us both some money. I love how much I’m learning here already.

I use wood pellets also and so does the rescue that I volunteer for, we are able to find them where we live, but I guess that all depends on your area and the stores you have around you.
