I think Oreo has an ear infection.  What she is doing; she is shaking her head, last night  was rubbing behind her ear she got up and started shaking her head, she was scratching her ear but her paw wasn’t even touching her ear, I smelled her ear and I felt that I could smell an infection.

I will be taking her to the vet as soon as I can get an appointment.  I just want to know what the symptoms are of an ear infection and that I am not over reacting.

Well, that’s certainly possible it’s an ear infection. If this is not a typical behavior it might be an infection – could also be ear mites. I don’t think you are always going to smell something if it’s an infection either.

Oreo doesn’t go outside or anything; could it still be ear mites?

I have a misconception of ear mites; what are they and where do they come from?

They can come from many many sources including hay and other animals. They are little bitty bug things.

I would take little Oreo in.

My rabbit had an ear infection and was shaking her head, scratching it. Head shaking is never a good thing

Well, at this point you don’t know it’s ear mites. You also would just have to clean the rabbit area and treat the other animals.

We are back from the vet; Oreo is fine, she had a complete physical temp was 102, ears have been checked and all he could find was some wax build up.  He checked the wax for mites and it was negative, no sign of an infection ears are healthy.  He feels that the wax was bothering her.  He cleaned the ears a bit.  He said that he doesn’t like to go to far down the ear because it can push the wax farther down into the ear.  I am to keep an eye on her for the head shaking, if it becomes worse I am to call him and he will give me something that is used for mites which also helps the wax.

When he was cleaning her ears she did the head shake that she does, which was helpful.  He did ask if I noticed any head tilting and I said no, she just shakes her head.

This probally sounds crazy; the peace of mind knowing she is OK is worth it’s weight in gold.

Peace of mind is important. Glad she is okay.

Glad to hear the good news and that you were able to get her in and get it taken care of even though it turned out to be an irritation from ear wax.  Better safe than sorry- and usually ear problems only get worse not better.  Kudos to a good bunny mom!!!

Glad to hear your bun doesn’t have an infection. They can be very stubborn! I agree about the peace of mind! Whenever I suspect an infection in my lop, we go to the vet. Better safe than sorry.
