I had been wanting to add a rabbit to our family for a while and 3 nights ago came across a listing on craigslist for a free female rabbit with cage and all supplies. I was first to respond so the man gave me the chance to pick her up first. I met him yesterday and got to bring home little Gabby. He said she was bought from a local pet store sometime last spring/summer. His daughter tired of the rabbit and she ended up living in their garage. With the summer coming on he decided to get rid of her since it would be too hot out there for her. He said the next lady to call him was the lady who sold her to the pet store. I’m so glad I called first so she wouldn’t just be a breeder the rest of her life but a loved family member.

She came with one of the typical too small pet store cages for rabbits or guinea pigs. He said she would only kick out the shavings or carefresh so it sounds like they just didn’t put it in the cage and said it was cleaned out once a week. He had another really small metal cage and asked if I wanted it. I took it immediately so I could take it home so no other animal would ever live in it again.

After picking her up I went to the closest pet store and got her some just pellet food without the “pretty” pieces of crap in it. I also bought her a litter pan and some rabbit safe litter. When we got home I set up our laundry room where she could safely hop around in there and have room to explore and be comfy. I put the litter pan with litter and some hay on top in the corner of the room. She immediately hopped into it to sit. She started nomming on the hay right away.

We had to go to town for some of the evening but when we returned home Gabby had already used the litter box. There were several poopies in it and a few outside of the box, but they were really close to it. When I cleaned the used part of the box out this morning there was pee where she had been going in it for that too. I’m very excited as she was not litter box trained at their house.

They had never had her spayed and in a few weeks I plan on taking her to my great exotics vet to have her spayed. I have not checked her sex but boy or girl we love this bunny already. She is slowly warming up to us and we’re being slow and gentle with her so she doesn’t get too overwhelmed over the new home she has now. My 7 year old daughter instantly fell in love with her and within minutes of sitting by Gabby she jumped into my daughter’s lap and nuzzled into her nightgown. I think with patience and time she will be a real cuddle bug. But if not, we’ll do what makes her comfortable.

I took some pictures of her yesterday morning after I got her settled into her new room. I’ll post them as soon as I figure out how to on this site. She is mostly black but has some white on the front feet, a dot of white on her nose and chest, and she has tufts of grey fur on either side of her tail. It almost looks like fur that is fixing to come out and it looks like little butt wings to me. She has some gray on the bottom of her feet too.

I look forward to learning as much as I can about my new little girl so we can spoil her the way she deserves.

Thank you for the warm welcome we are loving her so far. Her funny personality is starting to come out now. She was shredding newspaper and then would hop in my daughter’s lap and dig on the fleece jacket of mine she loves. Gabby then stood up and leaned into my daughter like she was hugging her. She really likes my daughter and of course Alivia is so excited about her new little friend.

She is amazingly gorgeous! Thank you so much for saving her from an uncertain future! Is she part Dutch, her marking look Dutch-ish, but does she have longer fur on her head?

Good call on taking the second cage too. Most of our first responses would be, “EW! I don’t want that horrible cage!” but had you not taken it, he probably would have listed in on CL for $5 or $10. At least this way, you can take it apart and throw it out.

Thanks for the sweet words about little Gabby. She has turned out to be very sweet already. Every time I go lay in the room with her she comes up to me and will walk around me. Last night she was full of herself and was hopping really fast being silly. She figured out digging and tearing up the newspaper was fun. She would then come up to me and let me pet her. Two different times I was able to pet her for quite a long time. She takes her head and nuzzles it under the palm of my hand while I’m petting her. She would sit there and let me pet her as long as I wanted to. I am thinking they must have loved on her a lot at one time and she had been missing the attention they used to give her. While laying on my stomach visiting with her she hopped on my back. It surprised me for sure. My cat Abby came in the room at one point and Gabby got so excited to see her. She hopped up to her face and started sniffing her. Poor Abby got a little overwhelmed by her and as she was walking away Gabby started hopping after her and Abby high tailed it out of there as fast as she could.

That was my plan with the small metal cage. I was going to take a pair of my husband’s pliers and take it apart and throw it away in pieces so nobody could ever use it again. The cage she was in will go with my collection of cages like that. I have adopted several guinea pigs and a few came with that style cage. I keep them instead of selling them for emergencies and so nobody can use them as a permanent cage for their animals.

I don’t know her type just yet. Her build reminds me of your pretty bun ChaCha but her fur is longer behind her neck just a little bit.

She waits at the gate I made and looks pitiful until we let her out to play in the rest of the house. She gets to come out and play most evenings and late into the night. I usually let her come out in the mornings too as that little look melts my heart.
