I noticed this red stain on te bunny room carpet a few minutes ago. I’ve been knocked out with a cold all day, so it’s possible that it’s already a few hours old. I do know that it wasn’t there last night.

The bunnies had a fight yesterday, and I noticed a few hunks of Ms. Rabbit’s fur (with no skin attached) on the carpet this morning. I didn’t see any new wounds or blood on her, though. They don’t seem to be fighting anymore.

The spot is a slightly brighter red than you can see in the photos. As you can see, there’s some normal yellow pee spots and a lot of poop surrounding the spot, which made me suspect that it’s actually red pee. I’ve put down some paper towels in the litterbox, but nobunny’s peed yet.

Does this look like normal red pee?

likely that it is red pee. What veggies have they had lately?

You can check for wounds (it’s hard to see with so much fur) with a hair dryer on low power and no heat-it’s an easy way to see all over quickly

I believe if it uniform it is likely to be red pee. Blood tends to swirl or clot in pee

Nifty idea with hair drier K&K!

You can test it out by putting hydrogen peroxide on it. If it bubbles up alot, then it most likely is blood. I noticed that was happening when I was cleaning up Jack’s urine (when he DID have blood in his urine due to a bladder stone). I talked to the vet about it and she said that hydrogen peroxide was a good way to tell. Later in an House Rabbit Society Seminar about health they also mentioned this trick. It works great for when I need to double check Jack’s urine. Since he has calcium and has had bladder stone issues, (which did cause blood in his urine to show up) AND he eats a ton of different kind of veggies that can sometimes give him reddish urine, the hydrogen peroxide helps me tell the difference if I am questioning.

Since it was near their poo and pee — check their feet, nails and private area for wounds.   Alot of times when bunnies get into fights they can use their back feet to kick and scratch and it’s not uncommon for a nail to break off entirely and bleed a little.

Thank you! I can’t claim the fame though-it’s a member’s tip from the bonding forum long ago I can’t recall who or I’d give due credit

                THAT is brilliant!

Wow, BB – thanks for the tip! I poured some Hydrogen Peroxide on it, and it didn’t sizzle at all. I guess it was just really red pee. I’ve read that kale and carrot tops can both cause red pee, and I had just introduced Ms. Rabbit to both of those at once, so I suppose that’s what caused it.

Thanks for the tip about the hair dryer! I’ll be sure to try that out if they ever fight again.
