Any good salad spinner recommendations? We just broke our second one in only two years and I’m going to buy another one this afternoon. The two we’ve had so far are the Oxo ones: http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/product.asp?SKU=111373

I’m thinking of one that is more manual with a handle you turn, but I’ve never really looked into salad spinners so I’m not sure what the different types are.

Hm, strange, that looks like the one we have, and it’s lasted at least 5 years and is still going strong… How are they breaking? They just stop spinning?

Yeah, the spinning mechanism breaks. To be fair DH dropped the lid of one. For the second, he claims I put it together wrong after he took it apart for cleaning, but I know I did it right. It looks like the screw thing inside just stripped off the plastic so it doesn’t catch the screw anymore (if that makes any sense). I was hoping for something more manual and less likely to break, but I didn’t have much success.

I just bought a simple one today from Wal-Mart. I don’t know how long it will hold up but it was only $6 and worked fine when I spun large amounts of parsley and romain

Did you take the lid components apart? Like… open up the lid/spinning mechanisms somehow? I’ve never done that… I just wash the lid/spinning mechanism all as one piece. Maybe that’s the difference??

Our first Oxo spinner- the lid was all one piece- was not able to be taken apart and that is what finally is what broke it- it got dropped and it came apart.  The Oxo spinner we got to replace it- the lid does come apart for cleaning- and that has worked fine for us for over a year now.  But I guess I have an advantage that my husband is a “kitchen guy” and he loves to cook and loves kitchen gadgets (that is always on his gift list)- so he is usually pretty careful with his “kitchen toys”.

We did take the components apart for cleaning. I went to put them back together and it just didn’t work. DH says I broke it 😛 but I put it back together the way it was supposed to go and it just wouldn’t spin anymore. It’s possible that it’s our fault we broke both of them, but I was hoping there might be something out there a little less breakable.

So far the cheap-o one I got to replace it is doing well! We’ll see how long it lasts. At least it only cost $8.

Mine is Davis and Waddell but this might be a brand only available here. I don’t have much to compare it to and only have had 3 months but it’s holding up well.  The inner bowl has 2 semi-circle indents you can see in picture. The lid spinning component has multiple mouldings that fit these indentations and engage the spinning bowl. The lid itself seems to be quite solid. The knob comes off sometimes when I use it but I rather it be removable and come off occasionally then have it snap off permanently.

Oh that’s exactly what I was looking for! I didn’t see anything like that in my Bed Bath & Beyond, but I see one almost exactly like it on Amazon.com – I’ll definitely have to order there last time.

That’s similar (outer bowl is not clear) to the one I offered you, but if for your own peace of mind you want to go with the one on Amazon, feel free.
