I have secured a position at a local grocer that is a 10 minute walk from my apartment
I’ve been bugging the HR manager for 3 months. My dad shops there all of the time and tells the cashiers “Hire my daughter! She has 5 years of experience in retail!” He tells them in a half joking way
My dad went there on the 10th of this month and spoke to one of the cashiers and she told him to use her as reference and to reapply today because the HR manager is going to call people for interviews. So, I called and spoke to the manager and she told me to reapply (making sure on this one) and so I did. And I got a call within 3 hours while I was at my current job (that I want to get out of!)! The HR manager wanted an interview the same day, but I was at work, so she scheduled me for Tuesday the 15th!
I was nervous yet confident. I bought my resume and references (I have a friend that works at the same grocer in another city so she has been giving me tips) and did the interview. I thought it went well, but I saw a pile of other applicants.. I believe 5 other people were after me. After I had left, I went into the card section (this is a one stop shop grocery store) and bought a thank you card, filled it out and went to give it back to the HR manager. After I gave her the card, she said “Would you be willing to come back for a second interview?”
My second interview was with the department manager. I thought she would be a grumpy person.. (I don’t know why I got that image in my mind) but I was very wrong. She was very funny and full of energy. She and I got talking. She asked me “if you could ask me one question, what would it be?” I asked her (this was my own thought up question) “What happens on a typical day at the job?” She was taken aback and was surprised by the question LOL! She began explaining and she said once a month senior citizens are transported via a bus and come to shop with us! I said ”That is so awesome!”
I made her cry too.
She said that I am guaranteed 20 hours with benefits. I have health insurance, but I was looking for a place where I could have my own (which is pretty hard) and I just said “It is hard to get insurance with this economy.” She and I went back and forth and she eventually said that her own mom has blood cancer. We just related. I think it was pretty awesome.
The manager said she has another interview after me, but she says she wants to hire me. She said we’ll have to talk something out about when the best time to give my notice at the job I’m at.
She said I’ll be likely working more than 20 hours, because some cashiers call in sick. My friend that works at the other location said that is what happens to her, so it is true for the one in the city I’ll be working at. The pay is higher than min wage and employees tend to climb the ladder pretty fast, as raises are based on hours worked.
And.. it is a union job.
I feel so happy. Everything is falling into place now.
Now.. to find a school At least I have one less worry
