I think I saw this topic before, but for the life of me I can’t find it!

It turns out I’m quite allergic to timothy hay, so I got the bunny monsters oat hay and orchard hay.  They looooove the oat hay.  I put a clump of each one in their basket and they chow down on the oat hay, nibble on the orchard hay, and I end up throwing most of the orchard hay on the litter box.  They like the orchard hay about as much as the timothy hay, which is to say they eat but don’t get too excited about the prospect.  So my question is can I just give them oat hay?  It seems like if it encourages such good hay eating then I should just do that one, but I don’t know if there are any nutrition issues that I haven’t been able to find.   If anyone has an answer or a link back to the previous discussion of the topic I would be much obliged.

That’s fine, you can feed just the oat hay. There are other hays you could also try depending on availability in your area. Glad you found something that works for your allergy.

Thanks! I will maybe just use the orchard hay for litter box topping then until I use it up. Frankly, given I’m allergic to most grasses I was prepared for the probability of having to work to find something that I could handle, I’m happy that I found something that doesn’t bother me AND they like so well. I wasn’t looking forward to living on claritin forever 😀 And I will probably try some other types out to see how my allergies handle them and how the bunnies like it.

Absolutely. My Samantha is a total Oat Hay eater, and only in recent months has she deigned to try other hays as well. She was so much better at devouring Oat Hay, the Mature, dry, yellow ugly kind, than any other hay including timothy that I just stuck with what she loved. It’s very good for her coat, by the way. (Talk about silky). I asked my vet why she liked the ugly older Oat hay so much, and it turns out there are little bits of flower-like parts to them that taste really good, which is why I see her rooting in it a bit at first serving. It’s totally healthy, so give whatever gets eaten in the largest quantity.
              Can’t have too much hay.

Also oat is nice and helps move things nicely through the bunny’s tummy. Good for when bunny is going through a large shed

My bunny Chacha enjoys the light shiny colored oat.

I too have allergies to timothy, so I only use Orchard grass. Meadow is also good for allergy sufferers.
