I made an appointment for Friday morning to have my approximately 1.5 year old female bunny spayed.

I’m really nervous about this surgery… I don’t want her to be in any pain. I asked the vet if she would need any sort of pain meds after the procedure and they said no. I can’t really imagine an animal not needing pain medication after having invasive surgery.

Also, I built her a two story cage. Is there any way to keep her from jumping up there while she is recovering? I don’t want to leave her in her carrier for a long time.

What are your personal experiences with spaying your bunny? Did it go well? Did your bunny recover quickly?

        Thank you!

Most rabbit experienced vets will give you metacam or some other pain medications for the next few days after a spay. They do drug them up very heavily on pain meds for the actual procedure though and it can take them a full day to recover from the procedure.

As for the cage, can you block off the top floor temporarily while she is recovering? Is there a ramp? I wouldn’t worry so much if you have a ramp.

I would press the issue of pain meds to them. They are necessary in my opinion. A spay is a full hysterectomy after all. They wouldn’t expect a human woman to not have pain meds.

Both my girls did perfectly fine after the surgery

If you can, can you block of the 2nd story of her cage? Even with a piece of cardboard or something, just to keep her from jumping up.

Did your vet give you pain pills for your bun? Also, is it in pill form? Because I don’t see my bunny being able to do that… I think a liquid would be hard enough.

A lot of pain medications are in liquid form from my experience.

The vet will give a syringe to administer the medication. A good way to check the stitches is to hold up a treat, and while bunny is on her hind legs, to look at the stitch area.

I got the pain meds in liquid form. Both my girls thought it was a treat, they would get excited about the stuff. Guess it was a tasty flavor They both got cranky if I didn’t hurry it up with meds lol.

Ditto-I’d press the issue for pain medication. Was it the vet or the receptionist who said they don’t do meds? Often the front desk clerk doesn’t get things right.
And very honestly-if they are hesitant or refuse, I’d cancel the appointment and find another vet. I think pain control is very important post surgery especially for rabbits.
Metacam is what I’ve always been given, it’s honey flavored and liquid -very easy to give

I hope they listen to me about the pain meds because this vet charges almost half of what another one in town does, and they come highly recommended online.

If this vet is less expensive, it is just possible that pain meds are not included in the quoted cost of the spay. In that case, I’d make it clear that you are more than happy to pay the additional cost for pain medication. Did the quoted price include anesthesia? It sounds crazy but I have received quotes from vets where the cost of the spay or neuter was given, but they didn’t tell you that it would be another $100 for the cost of anesthesia. Hopefully you received a written break-down of the fees.
