Both my rabbits have had their 2nd ivomectin injection to treat fur mite. I noticed after the first that Jersey lost a large patch of fur on her back. This all had new growth underneath so the fur was due to come out.  My bill tells me she got twice the amount that Rumball got. Now after the 2nd injection, Rumball is losing more tufts of fur.

Could ivomectin trigger moulting? I did quickly ask the vet on this and she said not normally. She thought it could just be seasonal moult. It’s just odd how it has coincided.  I thought perhaps it was a stress reaction to the vet trips but they’ve been before numerous times without this result.

One of the things I need to do is keep the fur down in the environment so this sudden extra moulting is making that tricky. Am I just unlucky and it’s major moulting happening at same time as their treatment?

I remembered reading about Ivomectin at http://www.barbibrownsbunnies.com Under Medicine Chest, this:

“Ivomec – 1% Solution for cattle. This is used for treatment of fur mites and many internal parasites. I treat all rabbits orally (although it is an injectable solution) every 3 months. New animals brought into the barn are treated at once and dosage is repeated in 10 days. I am convinced of it’s effectiveness in preventing and treating fur mites and encephalitazoon cuniculi (the parasite responsible for Wry Neck). I use a dosage of 1/10cc per pound of body weight but many breeders use less with reported success.” – Barbi Brown

In her index to articles section on the home page, there is considerable info about it as an effective treatment of E. Cunniculi as well, but nowhere in her articles on Ivomectin, did I see mention of side effects, including moulting or loss of fur patches. I’d keep an eye on it, but I think now is the time of heavy moulting and it’s just a coincidence. I’ll see if I can find anything anywhere on Ivomectin and fur loss.

Although this discussion is talking about fur mites and Ivomectin, in chickens, I think it’s worthy to read.

From what I’m gathering, fur mites can cause hair loss. The only way Ivomectin would cause hairloss is if it were applied directly to parts of the body which then exhibited fur loss resulting from the direct application.

Dana Krempels talks about fur loss and bald patches from urine scald (urine is caustic and can cause bald patches) in her articles, but doesn’t mention that fur loss is caused by Ivomectin.

I’ve never heard of it triggering moulting …most of the time the parasites that this treats cause complete hair loss, like mange mites.

My guinea pig had mange mites and she didn’t make it…she lost all her hair it was horrible.

How do you think it’s odd that they both shed at the same time with the ivomectin? Is it not a normal shed you think??? You said hair is growing underneath…how come one bun got more meds than the other?? weight??

normally its used for cattle and horses, my mom has given me tubes before from our horse…never heard of him losing his hair. hmmmmm. I mean you have done the best you can for now, just watch and keep your vet posted and we will keep all ears and fingers crossed. ***vibes***
