So a little question…I had gotten (is that a word?) baytril for Noot and I was looking over my bill for the cost of a e-cone for Mandy that I bought at the clinic. And I noticed how much the baytril cost…about 70$ for 14 ml….I never noticed the cost, just always paid my bill at the vet office. And I will continue to, I love my vet, I think I couldn’t find better, couldn’t imagine better. And I know they are costly, it’s super-blood work done pre-surgery that day on the spot, xrays etc. Great facility…but umn…I could phone that prescription in elsewhere if needed. Is that expensive? Seems expensive for a drug commonly used. Anyone know what they spent on Baytril? Is it comparable?

It’s good to see you back, K&K!
I do pretty much the same thing, just pay my bill and then look at the breakdown later. I don’t know how the difference would translate between here and Canada, but I think the lowest our antibiotics run is about the $35 range, perhaps a little more, even from the vets. Baytril, last time we used it, I think (I can’t find my old bills) is a touch dearer at around $65 and that’s about a week’s worth of doses.
Sometimes I have to get pet antibiotics from a “real pharmacy” and then usually I find that’s more expensive because it’s something either incredibly strong or hard to find. Other meds, eh, not so much.

Baytril unlike many other drugs is PET ONLY- so you cannot get it from a human pharmacy.  I am guessing it costs so much because it was compounded into a liquid, maybe.  Baytril for pets (not livestock) comes in tablet form- flavored (brown) or unflavored (white).  Unfortunately most vet clinics carry the brown flavored tabs which is terrible to give to a bunny in my opinion since they are meat flavored.

Many vets get liquid Baytril thru a compounding pharmacy- which is more expensive than buying tablets (and it is an already expensive drug and not yet generic).  Baytril does come in injectable form that can be given IV- and I’v always thought that this might be what some vets use to add to flavoring to make a oral liquid medicine.

I would ask your vet why it is so expensive, you will feel better about asking.  How much Baytril did you get???

Well, I guess it depends on how long it was dosed for – my baytril that I recently got which was compounded for 14 days was about $35.00. I don’t really think it’s that commonly used except for rabbits either.

I’m sure that’s why we are always seeing commercials for 1-800-pet-meds. It’s an example of someone doing a mail order medical supply business with generics (probably) so it’s less expensive, just as our own health plans offer a mail order pharmacy with discounted drugs to make it less expensive for us and more profitable for them.

I’d do a little online search for comparative prices. First, try that one and see what it goes for there, then try VPI insurance if you use it (even if you don’t) and see if they offer a pet pharmacy optiion. If they do, price it out there. Then maybe just a search for Baytril, pet med online and look in the google shopping list to see if it is sold elsewhere. That will tell you if you’re paying a significant mark up. If you are, talk to your vet about giving you a discount. If it’s all about $65 like MM said, stick with your vet as the seller. I think if she is prescribing, she’s obligated to give you a prescription to take with you if you don’t want to buy it from her.

It’s really not the cost of the baytril but the cost of the compounding too if it is compounded.

I don’t remember which meds I’ve gotten for Lolli. I think baytril and then a pain medicine. She’s had sutures 3 times, including her spay. But everything has been around $40, give or take.   Perhaps it’s also more expensive since you are in canada?  ????

My baytril was 14 days for 70$ ……

I wanted to know what % is in it …because I was scared if all my rabbits get sick from Velvet…so 30$ for the checkup, 30$ for the antibiotic shot, 70$ for 2 weeks of Baytril …. x6 rabbits. AHHH!!!!!

So I was looking for a cheaper idea and I found…
                        http://www.allbirdproducts.com/newproductpages/baytril.html
It’s too bad I don’t have more information about it but I couldn’t find anywhere to buy liquid baytril but here….but who knows whats in it, what %, etc etc…and I would need to get the correct dosing from a vet anyways so it’s pretty much a terrible idea but…What I should do is call other vet clinics and see how much they would charge me for baytril if anyone ends up getting sick…but again I think they would already have gotten sick by now its been over 2 months since Velvet started being sick and until her treatment.

And what the heck 17$ Brittany….man I’ve been ripped off big time.

My vet check up is usually 45 and it was ear baytril. I dunno if that has something to do with it.

Baytril Otic is different from Baytril oral or injectible in that it is formulated for the ear with other medications and ingredients.

Chacha has been on regular baytril and otic and it has never been more than $20.

Sure Lindsey come to WA my vet has helped poor chacha’s ears that other vets didn’t even find!

WOW Sounds like the price I paid is about right! Trust me I know all the fun of compounded-the meclizine I got is compounded and it’s about 60 a week and only lasts a week or two so there isn’t an option to get a bunch at a time. The worst though is the darn compounding pharmacy has the rudest people working there. I dread picking anything up from there. Drugs should, after their patent is up, go down in cost…I would think Baytril especially since it’s made by Bayer should be cheaper. Yucky.

Hello I’m new here and was wondering if anyone has ordered from http://www.allbirdproducts.com yet and has had a good experience? Do they deliver to Canada and would it get over the border? My rabbit has been given it twice for about 7 days for the same ear infection so for about 14 days and in our last visit he said we will use it again if the infection is still there, and its 50 bucks every time for it and 60 for the visit.

I’ve never used any website for baytril. Is your vet compounding your baytril? There is an added cost for compounding.

You need to ask your vet about that baytril – I have no idea if the kind they put in the birds water has the proper dosage amount for your rabbit. It’s formulated for bird’s water so it’s very likely it’s not an adequate dosage for a rabbit.

He’s not compounding it? Are you getting it in a pill form? Nevertheless, the baytril for the birds is made to be put in water and may not be the proper dosage for your rabbit so you need to have that conversation about this product with your vet.

I agree- do not use poultry medication for a rabbit!!! Escpecially since it is generally sold by the gallon I believe- so I am assuming this website is repackaging the medication. That is way too many factors to not have “controlled” about something you are giving your bunny orally. Who knows how it is being stored, measured and shipped- and that the manufactures directions are for storing, shaking before use, exposure to light, etc.

Ask your vet for Baytril in an unflavored tablet- purple tablet. If they do not carry it- ask if they can call it into another vet in town that does or see if they can compound an oral medication using injectable Baytril and compounding liquid/sweetner.
