so sick of littermaterial! I mean I make my own strips of cardboard and they are great but I am so sick of littermaterial, it composts too slowly because my warm season here is so short in the north and I am just tired of it. so I started using just hay in the boxes. I have three small boxes for my quartet now  and dump out and put fresh hay in them daily. It is so easy! If you don’t mind the hay smell it works great. Sometimes when I come to change it the boxes are just rabbit litter and all the hay is gone. This composts fast.

Do you have problems with the pee smell? I’ve noticed that if my rabbits pee on hay, it stinks up half the house in less than a day.

My house is bone dry because the temp dropped into arctic freeze, my heating is on high, and smells can’t linger in such dry atmosphere. But normally it would smell. They are in my basement so it does not matter much.

I’ve been using timothy has as litter and it works great. We never get a bed smell and it seems to absorb the liquid pretty well. It’s kept me from needing to buy litter/bedding because Nibbler won’t eat the stuff and I have this huge bag of hay so I had to put it to use somehow. It just so happens that it has worked out great as litter!

Petzy, I totally understand your feeling toward litter material. It’s one of my pet hates.

I’m thinking of doing this again too, with straw. I think I’d feel better using straw rather then the good eating hay. Maybe with some newspaper on the bottom to do that inital absorption. It’s funny, but I don’t tend to notice the smell of soiled hay but can pick up a little on soiled wood litter and paper products.

Vinegar has proven to be a great odour absorber for me. I’ve said this a lot around the forums! Maybe I’m immune to the smell of vinegar.. I only ever smell it when I first pour it and then no time after.

I use straw for litter, and sometimes hay when I run out. I find it’s great for containing the smell for our 7 bunnies… Paper litter was good too but so much more expensive, considering how much 7 bunnies can wee!!!

I also think the rabbits would vote for all-hay littermaterial also if they were given the chance.
