While petting Ms. Rabbit this morning, I noticed some dandruff-like flakes around her ears. I examined her ears. All over the outside of both of her ears, there’s scaly, flaky dry skin. I scratched off some of the dry skin, but some of it wouldn’t come off. There is also some minor fur loss around the middle of the ears. She seemed to enjoy having her ears scratched at first, but then it seemed to just make them itchy.

I examined Mr. Bunny’s ears as well. Since he’s a REW, it’s hard to see “dandruff” on his fur, so I checked for dry skin. He has a little bit of dry skin on his ears, but it’s not covering most of the ear as it is with Ms. Rabbit.

Could this be a sign of ear mites? If so, should the bunnies get checked out or can I treat them at home?

I have to defer to one of the other FL’s to say whether it is a symptom of mites or something that needs medical treatment. If it isn’t, and is dry skin, possibly from scratching or the conditions inside while it’s winter outside, then I would recommend getting some Bag Balm, and gently applying it to the dry outer skin area. It should soothe and heal, even if it’s a more serious condition, so may provide some relief until you are sure.

I’d also check her nails, and if they are at all long, give her a trim right away. She may be irritating herself repeatedly.

I just clipped their nails about a week ago, so I don’t think it’s that. I’ll check to see if there’s any nails with sharp points that I missed. I have Bag Balm already, so I’ll put some of that on both bunnies’ ears.

Is the skin under the flakes normal or red and irritated looking?

Olivia has some dry spots on her ears right now too. I assume they can get dry skin in winter just like us humans. A bit of Bag Balm seemed to help moisturize. She wasn’t pleased about the greasy, smelly spot on her ear though!
