        Hey everyone,

It’s been forever since I’ve been online so I’ll give a very quick update beofre I launch into my question. My two bunnies, Charlie and Layla are both fine and in perfect health.

Recently I began fostering for my local bunny shelter and one of the rabbits has had to have his eye removed due to an abcess behind they eye.

So my question is, does anyone have a rabbit with their eye removed, and how does it affect them? I know that K&K had Bailey who was completely blind, but Benny will only be partially affected.

Thanks so much for your help 🙂

A few of the rescue buns that I have come across with the RA group here have had missing eyes, and if only 1 is gone there isn’t too much of a difference from what I have seen. they will turn themselves more to look at things, and a few don’t seem to jump up or down onto stuff as much, but that seems to be the extent of it. Granted, I haven’t taken care of one for extended periods of time, so I can’t say for sure what else is different.

Yes, they can manage quite well and having a partner is very beneficial to them.

Hi Cassi ! Good to hear from you and of your pair.

I’ve been reading the Save Rabbit Runaway FB page and saw you pop up on it recently. Is this foster one of theirs?
There is a member here whose bunny had an eye removed and it was amazing how quickly it healed and he was doing so well. He did have a bonded buddy so that probably helped him reorientate. I’ll find the thread if you’re interested in taking a look. Sadly, this rabbit passed away but not because of the eye removal or anything.

Do they know what caused the abscess behind the eye? How is it effecting his eye currently?

My little girl Ava just had this surgery done on 12/30/2010. She has been doing pretty good. It hasnt stopped her climbing !!

So far I have noticed she does tend to look around a little cockeyed, probably making up for the loss of sight on that side.

Havent put her back with her sister yet but I expect they will up to thier shannanigins as soon as I do , I just want Ava to have time to adjust before putting them togother.  All in all she is doing well!!

JG-BB is always my forum for any odd bunny questions 🙂 I also stalk the forum but rarely post. He is a Rabbit Runaway foster and they’ve been amazing with him, even though they have limited resources and quite a few special needs bunnies.
I went to see him today and he seemed fine. I felt that he was still trying to see out of his eye…which was a bit funny. He seemed to get around ok and even flopped.
Benny has a bonded bunny mate, Rose, who loves him very dearly…even now that he’s a pirate bunny 🙂

I don’t know what caused the abcess cause we hadn’t had him for long when this all happened but I do think it was teeth related. He had a tooth pulled last week and I’m pretty sure the two are related.

denise, it’s nice to know that my bun isn’t the only one 🙂 I’m glad Ava is doing well and hope that Benny can still climb and get around well!

Denise, it might be a good idea to put your bunny back with its companion. The other bunny will be helpful to the one whose eye was removed. I’ve read stories about bunny whose eye was removed and its companion would help it out. : )

Well it seems the girls decided to get back together while I was at work today! Came home to find the wrong bun in the pen, Mags has tried to free Ava for two weeks so i figured it was pretty secure, never underestimate a rabbit!

So no signs of fighting but Mags is being overly agressive with Ava’s eye, so they will only be allowed to be togehter when I am home. she is trying to pick the scabs off and I think it is too early. Nice to see they are still able to be togehter and once her scabs are gone we can go back to normal!!!

                            Hi Cassi,

My bun Pogo had his eye removed at the end of October 2010. The difference with him though is that he has been blind in that eye since birth(or close to it). I got him when I worked at petco in February 2009. A breeder came in with a 1 month old (maybe younger) netherland dwarf baby with one blind eye. They couldn’t breed or show it I guess so they wanted somebody to take it. After they came in about 3-4 times I finally took it. I had never had rabbits before and honestly, I was a little afraid of them, but I was his only hope. By the way, they said it was a girl and so did my vet! They were wrong! lol anywho…went to the vet right away and got it checked out. They sent me home with some antibiotics for an infection because of the discharge. Pogo had a COMPLETE cataract! Baby blue color…the whole eye. He had a couple infections for the next year but nothing major. Then I noticed the color of the eye changing a bit…different shades of blueish white. So I took him to the vet AGAIN! and she recommended me to the eye specialist. They did all kinds of fancy tests on the little guy but they couldn’t find out anything other than he’s completely blind because the cataract is so thick. Well right around July 2010 maybe August, I was taking Pogo out for his play time in the livingroom and noticed a discharge on his bad eye. I wiped it off and notice a film on his eye. I blinked his eye for him a couple times to try to get it to go down to the corner(I had to do this often) and instead his inner eye fluid came out…ick! lots of it! Scared the HECK outta me! Took him to the vet ASAP! The vet says he has an ulcer. A tiiiiiny hole in his eye. She also said antibiotics and pain killers should clear it up. Well 2-3 months later it’s still there and more smaller ones are developing! We even tried treating for e. cunniculi. Nothing worked and he was in a lot of pain(although you wouldn’t hardly know it! Pogo eats right through it all and doesn’t even get grumpy!). I suspect his lack of response to the pain is probably because he’s always had some kind of discomfort there and gotten used to it. Well, since nothing worked our only option was removal. Once the surgery was over Pogo IMMEDIATELY seemed 100X better. He’s always been an awesome, happy bunny but he exploded with joy! That seems to be the only thing that’s different. He jumps on top of his up-side down laundry basket, enclosed litterbox, soft “dog house” from CVS, and end table/cat litter box cover hideaway. He still runs full speed around the room and does binkies! He eats more than EVER! He’s never had a buddy bunny. We tried but he attacks any other bunnies. He’s fine with my cat and dog and rats. He did grow up with my hedgehog when he was a baby. She passed away and he had a hard time for a little while but seems to be fine now. He’s very resilient and I’m so happy for that. Long story short! I got a free bunny that cost me around $2,000 in vet bills but I totally don’t regret any of it! I’m just so glad he’s finally comfortable and happy!

                            Thanks for reading my novel!

                            Tiffany

Wow, thanks Tiffany. Pogo sounds like an adorable little bun, and I’m so glad he’s not in pain any more! And you had a pet hedgehog? That is super awesome!

I visited my bun, Benny on Saturday (He’s not staying with me cause he needed regular vet checkups and I’m without a car) and he’s so much happier than what he was. He used to be a bitey, lungy, growly bunny but on Sat he was very placid and happy. He spent a long time licking me and then my bag, so I’m glad he hasn’t forgotten about me! He’s a changed boy, and I certainly could never regret the vet bills…although mine weren’t quite as high as yours! I’m just glad that I had the money for it cause a year ago it would not have been possible for me to raise the $1500.

Now the only obsticle is that the place he’s staying has had a case of myximatosis so he’s in quarantine until Wednesday. i’m so so scared that he’ll get it cause his immune system is compromised after the operation. I’m holding my breath and hoping, and I’ll know on Wednesday.

Thanks for your post Tiffany, it was really helpful 🙂

Oh Cassi ! I’m reading about myxi everywhere, it’s so rampant. I’ve got that fear too of my loves contacting it.
Thanks for the positive update on Benny. That;s really great that this has allowed him to be more comfortable and affectionate!
Continued health (((vibes))) for him and your bunnies. Please give nose rubs to Charlie and Layla for me.

Hi, just thought I’d put up a couple pics of pogo and his eye. They’re pretty dark but it’s very hard to get a pic of him because he’s soooo dark in color. He’s a very dark blue.

Pogo, be sure to use the ADD Reply button, not the Quick Reply button to try this.
Your jpg might be too large. It has to be under a certain size to insert it into the post. You would have gotten a little line, in red I think, saying the #### was too big or something like that. If so, resize your photo to be smaller in a program like Paint, and upload it again. If you did Upload it successfully, don’t forget to click the Insert button to the right of the Upload button once it’s done. Then you can move it around or make it smaller by grabbing a corner of the image once it’s in your reply.

                                              Hey guys,
I’m very sorry to inform everyone that Benny died a few weeks ago. He had an undiagnosed stomach ulcer that killed him. He was uncomfortable during the night and some pain relief was given, and he passed away at 5am in the morning. We had a double loss, as beautful girl Layla passed away the following night.
Thank you for all of your posts about one eyed bunnies. I’m very grateful 🙂

The only way I can get pictures in here is to copy and paste. Like I said before he’s a VERY dark blue bunny and hard to get any good pictures of. He usually just looks like a black blob. I’m really sorry to hear about Benny and Layla Cassi… I can’t even imagine what you’re going through.
