When I came home today I went to check up on my rabbit (Luna). I went to pick her up (which she hates) and noticed as I held her that one of her toe nails was sticking out from her hind foot. I looked closer and could see that the nail was broken back. It appeared to have been bleeding slightly, but has stopped. I’ve searched my room for any blood, but haven’t seen anything (It’s hard to tell since the carpeting is multi-coloured). the nail looks like it split at an angle so a piece is still fully attached and the rest is still slightly connected. I know I need to apply some sort of antiseptic. What would be best? And will the quick and nail grow back alright?

She hasn’t been messing with it and is walking around just fine from what I’ve observed.

I’ve attached a quick picture below as well.

        Thank you!

        ~Kristin

          Hi and welcome

Has bunny had her nails trimmed regularly? If not, rabbit nails can grow to long lengths and could possibly break off and become painful o_O ouchies.

There is a powder called “Quick stop” that is at petshops for when it bleds. It will stop the bleeding only and not the pain. I have heard of people using flour to stop the bleeding as well!!

Can you cut off the part that is jagged but broken? Keep a close eye on the toe. It should grow back fine, but if it doesn’t or if she looks like she can’t use the foot, get her in to the vet for a quick check.

My bunnies have done this several times. Try to trim off any dangling pieces of nail, and then clean the whole area with a little warm water if she’ll let you. You might also want to put a little Neosporin without pain reliever on it.

Get her checked out if it looks infected or if she seems to be having trouble walking on that foot after a few days.

Thank you for the help everyone! I’m going to trim her nails with my mom’s help and go out for some Neosporin.

Also. Luna just ate some of her poo. Not the cecotropes, but the usual sort of poo that I find in her litter box. Is this normal or should I be worried?

The poo eating.. its happened to my bunny occasionally. I’ll see a half eaten poop. I don’t think its anything to worry about.

                        Kristin,
This is an aside from your post, but is that your real first and last name in your User Name? BB strongly advises our members to never use their last names here, as a safety precaution, so I would urge you to email her to get your user name changed to Kristin only, or Kristin and Luna, or something like that. The site is being updated so it may be glitchy for a while to change, but I think it’s important. (Trollers, spammers, evil-deed-doers lurk.)

Thank you for the concern, but no Kelsey is my middle name. I don’t like my last name much anyways so I don’t put it in my usernames.

Now it seems I have another problem! Luna hasn’t been using her litter box ever since she got hurt. I have a space gated off for her when I’m not home and she has been pooping all over the place when she’s in there. she had still been using the box to pee in, but just now decided to go pee on the floor of her cage. I’m hoping that she’s just upset about her toe and that this isn’t something serious. Any thoughts?

How does the toe look now? Is she hopping on her foot okay?

She uses just fine for the most part. If she need to scratch her chin she can’t use it as well as her other foot though. i couldn’t trim any of the broken nail off because she would twitch. it looks like the quick might still be attached to it so i don’t want to cut it. her toe looks okay though.

You can put a bit of litter on the pee outside the pan to absorb it, then put it into the litter pan. Might want to slide the pan over to that spot in case she wants the change for some reason. She’s probably just stressed and will get back to her comfort zone and regular use of the litter by tomorrow. Let us know. (BTW, tell your parents that’s a nice pair of names. )

Okay and I hope so. I’m a little fearful of making mistakes with her so excuse me if I seem to be over reacting a little. I think I’ve read too much about rabbits. I worry myself about every little thing with her, but I figure better safe than sorry. (And thanks! I think they’re a good pairing too.)
