Ugh Mr. Bun-Bun has what I thought was a little sore hock. I noticed he had a rubbed-off pink patch on the inside of his right back foot. Not unusual for rexes I know, but tonight I noticed it actually looked like an infection (whitish spot with a tiny red ring.) Also, it’s not on the normal spot for sore hocks, it’s on the bottom but closer up to the side where pressure would never be applied. I’m not even going to bother to try to take a pic because it’s very small, maybe 2 mm across.

Well tonight I picked him up to apply some Neosporin for the first time. When I was putting it on I noticed it’s actually a RAISED spot, a bump protruding from his foot! So definitely not a normal sore hock or callus, which would be worn down. The area is quite small… I’ve been googling and image googling and can’t seem to find any answers so my question is:

        1. Should I just keep applying Neosporin for a few days over the weekend and see what happens? Obviously this is not a critical or life-threatening situation at this point so I’m not going to rush to the vet.

        2. Anyone else have this happen to their rabbit? If so, any advice?

        3. Nothing I’ve read seems to be helpful, Mr. Bun-Bun doesn’t have dirty living situations, quite the opposite. I’ve read that bunnies can have problems being on hardwood floors longterm, but I don’t have a choice… nor can I line his cage with cushy carpets and towels because he’ll eat them and pee on them. But since the bump is raised I really don’t think it’s a sore hock.

Any input is appreciated. Thanks and hope you’re all having a good night!

Since it is a raised red spot- I would take him into the vet.  It sounds like there is something underneath the skin causing the soreness, redness and possible infection.

              Love the pix. Very appealing.
If today were Friday I would say treat it as you are and see how it looks on Monday, or try Bag Balm instead as a topical treatment for the weekend. However, you can get an appointment today or tomorrow, so best to bring him in. Does he need a nail trim? I find it’s worth the trip (and price) of a vet visit to have him looked at and nails done as well, while you’re there.

Thanks for the input. I hope this doesn’t make me a bad bunny mommy but I’m not taking him to the vet right now. I keep peeking at it and I think it’s irritation on the callus. He does have a smooth pink callus across a bit of his foot, and only at the edge is it reddish. It’s reallllly small but from what I’ve read these problems can escalate (like skin sproblems in humans too.) I did buy some bag balm and am going to use that instead, he was trying to lick off the Neosporin. He’s clearly not in any discomfort and I don’t see him grooming the area much so it’s not bothering him. So I’ll use the bag balm a few times a day over the weekend and take him in if it doesn’t get better. Oh rexes and their silly feet.

That does sound like a callous. I would make sure that his litter box does not get too damp too.

Wow that Bag Balm is great. The redness is gone already after only applying it for two days. I think it’s good I noticed it because it definitely had the opportunity to crack and get infected, the Bag Balm seems to be soothing it and he doesn’t try to lick it off either. Will the fur grow back or is he going to be stuck with pink calluses forever? Just wondering.
