This is day 1 of the bunny’s bonding journal. I let them have to much space to quickly ( don’t worry I didn’t get rid of the window seat i just put it in the garage for now). So i made them a new pen that has a lot of litter boxes so that they won’t go outside the box. But it has only been a day and she still Pooed out of the litter box! ah!

As you can see she still pooed out side of the boxes!

I think I found out her problem. I am pretty sure she doesn’t like the litter or litter box because when I put a treat through the bars of the pen she put her paws on the edges of the litter box then she started to slip so stopped and she wouldn’t come up to the pen because the litter box was there. so I had to reach over the pen to give it to her. should i try some different litter?

Are you using wood stove pellets?

Do your bunnies go in a specific spot? I don’t think the couple stray poos are a problem, I would just put teh poo into the box.

Haha, I love that you are worried over 3 stray poos. Felony poops in his sleep, so every single day I have to sweep up little Coco Puffs he left while dreaming under his usual snooze spot, under the kitchen table.

Yeah, there will always be some poo’s. I think you have way too many boxes in there.

Are you sure those poos aren’t flying poos from when she jumps out of the litterbox? I can see that when mine jump out of the litter box, their paws make the litter and poos fly out.

I switched them back to the condo with more litter boxes than I used to have ( i used to only have one on the bottom floor) now I have one for each level. I think this should work out better.

Mocha, you have a funny typo up there… you said “this is day 1 of the bunnies’ BONDING journal”. My heart skipped a beat~

How much is she leaving droppings around? If it’s only a few, like in the photos, it’s within the acceptable margin of being littertrained, even if she drops them there rather than flicks them out of the box by acident. If she leaves piles, or soils the floor all over, that’s a different story.
My rabbits usually have some scattered droppings around the boxes but it’s a minute amount compared to their total output so I still consider them littertrained. Littertrained means all of the pee and the majority, like 90%, of the poo go in the box.

this is my rabbit pen in the a.m.  I sweep every night and my rabbits have excellent litter habits. If what I see in your photo is all the mess you get from Lulu then you should not worry. A rabbit who needs litter correction is one who leaves piles of poo or litters all over.

OH no!!!! It is way worse than then the pic. there was at least 1 pee spot every other day and you could barely see the floor because of all the poo! so thats why I got rid of the window seat/pen ( don’t worry I still have it in the garage.) until they get trained better. so they are just in there cage for right now. I am hoping that before christmas I will get the window seat back up.

Petzy: LOL I didn’t even notice it! I will have to change that! My heart would skip a beat too!

My rabbits are bad with soft surfaces, blankets, carpets and rugs. I saw a huge improvement when I removed those materials. You could try it out. I know it is tough to take away their comfy things but it would give you insight as to what the cause of Lulu’s litter slip-ups is. That’s too many litterboxes for two rabbits. It will drive you crazy and just confuse them in the future when you take them away again. Are you using a wood pellet litter? Some rabbits prefer the paper-based one b/c they are softer. For your window patio you could try laying rough tiles all over it to create a hard surface and see of she will stay cleaner up there.

I don’t have the pen with the litter boxes any more I put them in the condo now. I have to get cheap litter so thats why i get that stuff ( HSB)

I forgot you have a horse. You must have cheap hay or straw too then. Why don’t you try lining the horse stall bedding with a generous layer of that? I have not cared for a rabbit yet who passed up peeing/pottying on grass, straw or hay.
Other than removing soft materials from their environment and keeping things clean and making the boxes inviting — there is not much else you can do.

Our horse does not live in a stall so it does not use HSB or straw but we do have ALOT of hay!

Lucky you! Just be generous with the hay in their litterbox. You will have to change it often b/c of odor but it is the best way to keep the stray littering to a minimum.

should i still use a little litter on the bottom of it?
