Poor little Merry had a bad case of gas last night.  I was away and didn’t feed her, but my bf said that she totally wolfed down her veggies.  I do know that she got more parsley than normal, so I have some questions.

question 1:  could too much parsley cause gas?

question 2:  how in the world do I administer simethicone?  Her foster mom said that’s what she gave her in the past (liquid form), but when I tried Merry absolutely refused to take any!  I settled for tummy rubs and heat (body heat mostly, but also a lightly heated towel) and that worked, but she was probably in pain longer than she should have been

queston 3:  I ran across this little tidbit :

        • spinach, Swiss chard, beet greens, collards, okra, parsley, and leeks are among the most oxlate-dense vegetables

but I didn’t think that parsley was an oxalate-dense vegetable… is this just misinformation?  I would hate to think that I’ve been giving her something that might be bad for her!

        Thoughts? Advice?

        thanks!

yes, Parsley is listed in several places as containing oxalates but you would have to eat a ton to have an ill effect. Parsley is safe for rabbits but if she ate an unusually large amount it could have upset her GI. Feeding should follow a certain pattern because rabbits, like all animals, adjust to amounts and scheduled times and feeding change can lead to trouble.
It can be hard to administer the simethicone. I find it easiest by gently sliding the tip of the syringe into one cheek and then I slowly squirt it into the rabbit’s mouth while I rub the bridge of his nose. It works best on a tranced rabbit.

            Thanks, Petzy!
It wasn’t a huge difference in the amount of parsley, but I guess to a little 3.8 lb rabbit it is.

Also the change can have some effect. Usually a green that gives a bunny gas is discovered by trial and error. You just find out that something doesn’t go down will after they’ve tried it. I would avoid it for a week and see if she gets back to normal. (After the immediate help of the simethicone, that is.)
