Franz in the hospital :(

Short post cause I’m busy sorry…

I took Franz to the ER last night after him not having eaten or pooped all day. I left for two hours for class and came home to find him curled up in his litter box looking like crap. I took him right away and they kept him overnight diagnosing him with ileus (intestinal obstruction) and have him on crit care. He had a fever so he’s on antibiotics again. He had a runny nose again so they did a flush of his nasal passages and eyes for a culture. He also had his urine, poop, and blood tested. My vet has me in contact with someone who is going to help me get Franz eating his hay without getting sick. Picking him up at 5.

I’m so sorry to hear Franz is having health problems. My prayers and hope are with you that your vet’s treatment will improve his health. Glad to hear you will be putting in place a plan to increase Franz’s hay intake. Take care of yourself as well as your beloved bunny. HUGS

Oh no!!! I hope he recovers soon. I’m so worried about him. The combination of that fur and him not wanting to eat hay, this is just asking for problems.

I would ask the vet staff while he is at the hospital to shear him down for now. Not naked but down to 1/4″ of fur length. They have the good animal clippers at the vet’s and until he gets into a better hay-eating routine it will ease the hair burden inside him.

Hey guys thanks for the support. My little man came home with some medicine and some crit care. I have to give him medicine for “not eating” which I’m not sure what that is. Also another antibiotic because he had a fever and a runny nose, and the crit care to get some damn food in his belly. He seems really happy and he’s playing with me which makes me feel great. He’s pooping and eating but not like he usually does. I have a few leaves of green leaf lettuce out for him and he’s only eaten a little of one since this morning . I got him a treat ball for cats that you fill with treats or something and it has little holes you adjust that dispenses treats, and zomg he loves it lol he’s pushing it around with his little nose so frustrated haha. He had no wool in his poop and he really doesn’t shed. I brush him every day and I don’t really get any hair that comes off. The vet said it wasn’t from wool block just poor digestive movement most likely. Gotta go work on studying for finals. Write again later. Thanks again! <3

I’m glad that he is feeling better.

Is he still snubbing his hay? I’m not so happy to hear about that. I know you must know, but hay helps movement in his body. My bunny is still a picky hay eater, but when she was a baby, she’d eat more pellets than hay. When I lowered her pellet intake, she ate more hay.

You have said that when you brush him, nothing comes off. Have you tried lightly plucking his fur? When I brush my bunny, no hair comes off, so I just pluck fur off. Fur tends to come out light pulling.

He NEEDS to eat it. As you can see why!! Once his meds are done, hay only diet to get him to eat it. Otherwise he will keep snubbing it. And then you’ll be right back at the vet again.

So glad he’s doing better. If he is willing to get some hay in him it’s a good idea to push it. You might find that a change of flavor, like a second cut Timothy or Orchard grass, both of which are softer, might appeal to him if he’s being picky. With a fever and meds, it is hard to tell because it can effect his appetite differently than when he’s well.

He’s not really eating much of anything right now. Last night I left him with a bunch of green leaf and he ate all of it but now he won’t eat his pellets . I just talked to Ellen (one of the HRS educators) on the phone and she’s helping me come up with a plan for Franz. She says she can get any bunny to like hay lol so we’ll see! I’m going to talk to her again tonight. And Franz just doesn’t shed lol even when I pluck his fur I don’t get much so he’s fine on the fur, it’s definitely just the hay that’s an issue. I’m also waiting back to see if he has pasturella as well…my poor little baby at least he seems ok for now.

Pellets are the last things they will eat when they are recovering. Let us know Ellen’s plan – I’d love to know what her strategies are for getting non-hay eaters to eat hay!

I would still be inclined to trim and strip his wool down at this time of recovery.

No vets or groomers within 3 hours drive will cut him. The vets only do sani shave and he doesn’t need one. Ellen gave me te name of a woman an hour away that teaches people how to trim their own angoras for a fee. I’m going to take the class from her but my vet insists his fur is in good shape and he’s not at risk for wool block. So don’t worry! Also she found me a bun-sitter in rhode island that does it for $8 a day and has a giant basement done up just for bunnies.
