After reading about Bag Balm being beneficial as a topical balm for bunnies with some sores or irritation, I decided to buy some and keep it if I need it.

So I read the description on the box, and honestly, my cows do not have chapped udders. The girls are just fine.

And I am a bit confused as to why this traditional bovine balm is being sold in the makeup aisle of my local national chain drug store.

Can anyone tell me the modern uses of Bag Balm, for humans?

To keep skin from drying? My mom used to use it… I forgot for what reason.

When I got married, we traveled from the relatively decent humidity of the beach to the nasty dryness of the high desert. (Pismo to Vegas) My lips were SO chapped by the time I got there, lipstick was all but impossible.
I was working at a pharmacy at the time, and before we left my boss gave me a little vial of it to take with me. I thought it was a bit weird, but of course I didn’t say so. At any ate, I was desperate with my wedding in about 6 hours…so I put some of that bag balm on them and within a very short time later they were much improved. I was able to put my make-up on without a hitch. I swear by it.
These days for convenience sake I usually use Carmex, but if I can’t find that then bag balm is an excellent replacement. You just have to like getting your fingertips a little gooey for a bit. I have yet to find a decent applicator for it so I don’t have to dip my finger in a pot of sticky stuff.

Not exactly sure how safe it is for bunnies however. I would assume it’s okay, but I’d check with a vet first.

I read it was safe for bunnies because I only heard of it here, within the last month. I will open it.
I am expecting a vaseline like experience. But if I begin to moo, call the office and have them explain to the neighbors.

lol….If you start to moo, I will start calling you Pamburger. xD

I guess the product is used for cows who have to be on those electronic milking machines, as you can imagine how uncomfortable a cow’s ‘bag’ gets with such an heinous device. (For heaven’s sake, you have hooves…give that farmer a few good well-placed kicks, girls!)

*gigles* Uh-oh…methinks this thread could go seriously wrong in 3…2…1

                  Hahaa mooo! Rabbitpam!

It does have a vaseline like touch.

It’s not as thick and nasty as Vaseline though…it’s lighter in texture. More like Neosporin.
I wouldn’t use it on my skin because it does remain gooey until it sinks in. For example, don’t use it on your hands and then immediately try to type a form letter.
In Sammy’s case, I think it would be good if you’ve got a few moments to have her hold still while it absorbs, or it’s going to be all over your apartment floor.

Bag Balm has an entry in Wikipedia

                      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bag_Balm

I used it for my dogs in the past, before my vet recommended it for rabbit Clifford’s hutch burn. The original in the green tin is an antiseptic ointment that creates a protective barrier on the skin. It was reported that singer Shania Twain uses bag balm on her face as a beauty secret — It sure will give you a cowgirl image, LOL. I use it only on my hands~ It is just so sticky-icky but I like its scent.

…uh, oh…a scent. I am allergic to scented stuff. If it’s medicine, I will keep it, but methinks I had better stick with dry udders myself.
I haven’t opened it yet. Saving that for after work.

MM, we’re talking about Sammy here. “Hold her still while it sinks in”???!!!! Kidding, right?

                            K&K – speechless. Rare.

No, it’s not scented to have a scent — it’s the antiseptic in it that smells medicinal, a little bit like pine tar but not as pungent.

That’s odd Petzy, I’ve never felt that bag balm has any scent to it, except for the relatively mundane petrolatum smell.
Are there scented versions of the balm? That actually might be interesting.

Being a medicine in the first place, I don’t think they make a scented version. I can just smell the antiseptic stuff in it but it’s not pungent or strong. I have an old tin of it and it still has that smell.

                                        Pamburger here. *rolls eyes*

I opened it. It feels kind of like vaseline. It is not scented. It does smell anticeptic, kind of like that medicinal smell stuff like Bengay and those things have.
I think you would have to spray it with perfume and get a sturdy spatula to mix it in. Could take hours. MM, let me know how it goes.

I tried a small dab on the heel of my foot. Not bad.

Oh, the gifts just keep on giving. Petzy, I am reading the Wiki entry, and came to this quote from an article some guy wrote:

“Its uses are many, for example ‘squeaky bed springs, psoriasis, dry facial skin, cracked fingers, burns, zits, diaper rash, saddle sores, sunburn, pruned trees, rifles, shell casings, bed sores and radiation burns.'”

                                              Ok, here goes:
After waking up from a week of sleepless nights on a squeaky bed, (spring, bed sores) you put on your diaper, grab your rifle and some ammo and saddle up your camel. Ride on out from under the shade of a bushy tree (pruned) into the noon desert sun. Ride for 5 hours. (Sunburn, dry skin, cracked fingers, burns, diaper rash, saddle sores, psoriasis) Snack on the chocolate stashed in your now icky diaper (zits) and take shelter in the nearest empty base house (former atomic testing ground – radiation burns).

                                              Apply Bag Balm. Find cow.

I did ask, and RP did indeed answer! I quite impressed you managed to think that up.

Bag Balm is great stuff! I use it for my horse (it’s good for cuts, helps the hair grow back over bald areas, keeps flies off her udder in the summer) and I’ve used it for bunny sore hocks too. My grandmother found out it was a “beauty secret of the stars” and made me go buy her some. She uses it to moisturize her hands and nails.

It WAS a silly joke, MM, you silly girl.
And it’s about time someone noticed the siggy. *winks at Jerseygirl*

Progress: I carefully slathered Bag Balm on a blister, then my heels last night and slept in clean white socks. Just removed them. Blister needs more, but the white cracks I hadn’t been paying attention to (go barefoot or in sandles a lot down here) were sooooooo much better! Like, Wow! None of the cracks are white anymore, and they are 5x smoother. I think a few nights of that treatment and the heels will be as supple as my tootsies.
                                                              Good stuff!

(Grumpybun: worked hard on that one. Had to keep referring back to be sure I got them all.)

I use it for my hands. I’ve been getting a bad case of eczema. I also hear many quilters use it to moisturize their hands, since it isn’t greasy like hand lotions can be.
