I have cleaned Pip’s anal glands recently, but last night had to do so again becasue she is making a really funky, skunky odor and I thought they’d filled again. Hers are relatively shallow compared with the other two, so they are easy to scoop out, thank God.

Still, she occasionally smells skunky. Could this just be her body exuding the odor from her glands like some kind of territorial thing? It comes and goes, is not constant. I don’t notice a particular trigger, with possible exception of the third cut timothy I feed them. She’s on oat right now for shedding, but I still give her a little timmy to keep things interesting. I notice her poop becomes darker and smaller when she eats this, plus it smells strongly. However her glands are clean.

Any thoughts? Do I own a skunk instead of a rabbit?

Maybe it is just her        Cotton is usually smellier than Ruby.   Perhaps cuz he may be marking.    He isn’t always smelly

Don’t know if it would be the hay

            MimzMum,
I sometimes think I own a skunk too…I don’t think I’ve ever smelled Blu (male) but Oreo (female) still exudes a skunky stench every now and again. She and Blu are not yet bonded and are sharing a room, closer quarters than they were previously, and I think because of that they are both being very territorial. (On a side note, recently they’ve taken to poop wars in the living room where they each get separate play time ARG!)

And she is spayed…I thought it would end after she was spayed but I think it’s still in them to do it even if they’re spayed/neutered… Actually Blu still circles me when he gets excited (and only me haha)…and he’s neutered too.

not sure this helps at all, but at least you know you’re not alone!

            ~Ali

Hm. Thanks that might explain a few things. My male is also leaving a lot of territorial poos that he normally doesn’t, so this is probably her way to protest the fact that the dog spends a lot of time in the bedroom now.

Either that or winter is coming and it may be genetically programmed to do territorial marking at this time of year since in the wild they would be establishing their burrows with their stinky keep out signs. Just a guess.
