i had lolli’s ears cleaned a couple of weeks ago.  But she is still scratching at them and shaking her head quite a bit.  I have cleaned them  out myself and there was gunk, but not a whole lot.  Aside from putting a bit of vitamin e oil in her ears, is there anything else I can do?   She’s making MY ears itch with all this.  lol

Oh, I asked the vet about all the gunk and if there was a way to prevent it and she said no.  But I don’t keep a clean apartment so should I assume that if I kept it more clean, she might not get so gunky?  Or would that have nothing to do with it?   She just can’t be comfortable if she’s scratching and shaking her head all the time.  poor baby!

try cleaning out her eares once a month and if she still has a lot of gunk then try doing it more. She might be scratching her ears because she is not used to having them cleaned or she just doesn’t like the brand of ear cleaning you used on her.

Did the vet know, or say, what is causing the gunk? No advice given on how to prevent it, rather than clean it out?

I would have the vet do a culture on the gunk.

I looked at her ears last night. I know I’m not a vet but I didn’t notice anything unusual. No redness or anything. But I did notice her upper ears look a bit scaly in any area. So I’m going to try the vitamin E oil.

And I did ask about the gunk and what’s causing and it and everything and the vet said it was just normal and there wasn’t much that could be done. I need to try the vitamin E oil first because I have no money right now.

usually gunk and scratching is a sign of an ear infection (or other problem)- did the vet take a sample to look at it under the microscope?

If it is an ear infection Vit E oil will not cure it.  An untidy apartment will not cause ear gunk.  But the inside of the ears being moist can cause ear gunk and an infection- so the Vit E oil may help or may do more harm than good.

                    Gunk? O_o

Chacha was doing the same thing as Lolli. It came back as yeast. Vet did a culture test as well.. it is very unusual but it happens

The original gunk in her ear was white. The gunk I got out the other day was more yellow-y and white. I will see what I can come up with money wise and take her to the vet as soon as I can afford it.

Gracie just recently had a lot of ear wax and was scratching her ear a lot and I called the vet about it. She looked at her ear and said there was some white discharge and it was a bacteria infection. She gave me some baytril ear drops to give her for 10 days and she’s all better. So I’d probably just get her checked out. I paid for all that but for her x-rays I asked about payments and they told me about care credit (carecredit.com), maybe see if your vet is on there. You can pay off stuff depending on their plan (6,12,18, 24 months no interest). It’s so hard to pay for them sometimes, esp. during the holidays.

Sounds like it is more common than vets think.. skibunny. It was white gunk, eh? I saw my vet wipe the swab onto the microscope slate and it was white.

I was given Baytril Otic (I think that is the name) to administer in Chacha’s ears for 2 weeks. This will be her last week and her recheck is this Friday.

I think too the vet didn’t do much more cause I was just in for an ear cleaning. There’s no appointment required for that. I don’t know.

Yeah it was a white discharge.  Yup that’s the name of it, same thing she gave me.  Expensive little bottle.  I paid $35 I think for that.
