        Hi Everyone,

Well BunBun is really doing much better- today he’s hanging out on his “sick chair” but I think he’s fine- just hanging out lol. Of course I will be out all day- I swear he does these things on purpose.

I have these Salt Savors by Super Pet- they go on thoses Kabob things they sell at Petsmart/Petco. I offered it to BunBun yesterday and he licked it- then I caught im at his water bowl drinking!!! BunBun never drinks, which is a major problem since he has UTI and sludge issues.

The nutritional label reads as so:

Calcium, min 0.40%      Calcium 0.45%     Salt, min 96.00%        Salt, max 99.00%        Magnesium, min  0.02%         Sulfur, min 0.02

Copper, min  45 ppm       Zinc, min 20 ppm        Iron, min 600 ppm        Magnese, min 400 ppm         Iodine, min 5 ppm      Cobalt, min  4ppm

I love that it made him drink- he used to have a salt lick and would drink quite a bit then- back and forth from salt to water… maybe it was one of these Salt Savors he had. Do you guys think this is OK? I don;t wanna give him something that will hurt him- he’s just getting healthy again!

Btw, thanks for helping me through his illness- I couldn’t have gotten through without you all

I wouldn’t worry – he’s only licking it and not munching down on the whole thing. If it’s encouraging him to drink then that’s a good thing.

If you want to offer him a lick wheel, go with a pure salt (white) wheel nstead of this one you listed; it’s a mineral lick and rabbits who receive pellets should not consume added minerals, especially calcium. You can get plain salt ones in fruit flavors also, but check to make sure it’s just a salt lick not a mineral lick.

Hi Sarita- I was thinking the same thing- if it gets BunBun to drink more, it’s something I want to keep! I’m pretty sure these were the ones he used to like- cuz I tried a white salt wheel and a brown/red mineral wheel, and he wouldn’t touch either one. So it’s these little flavored ones that he likes.

Hi Petzy- Thanks for your reply- I will look in the pet stores for a flavored salt wheel- that would be great. I will probably put this one up in the meanwhile, since BunBun hardly ever eats pellets because of his sludge. He gets maybe 1 tbsp every other day, if that. This would be so awesome if he really increased his water intake- I think it would help him out a lot.

This is probably a silly question, but what happens if a rabbit is consuming pellets and also has a mineral lick? Does it make the calcium in their pee more concentrated?

I need Petzy to answer that question. But just want to say that I used to give Spockie the flavored salt licks from Petsmart. They were salt licks – I avoided the mineral lick which only came by itself in a package with a plain white salt lick. Some pet stores sell the white salt lick by itself for a few cents. Hanging it off the bars so it spins is easy. I also used the flavored ones on the hanging thing you stacked them on with the bell. If it gets him to drink, it’s a good thing.

According to biologist Dana Krempels a healthy rabbit will excrete excess minerals, even calcium, so in essence none of the licks are bad per se. We as rabbit owners have just become so cautious around providing extra calcium because the research concerning the calcium problems rabbits are prone for is still ongoing. It is a better-safe-than-sorry advice when I say not to use mineral licks. At any rate they are not needed. The salt (pure white or colored bright with fruit flavors) is just enjoyable for some rabbits and is not implicated in the formation of urinary tract stones or mineral metabolism disorders.
