Franz’s bunny doctor called me this morning and told me that his wet mount came up positive for the protozoan parasite, coccidia. It grown inside intestinal cells untill they explode to make spores which are passed in feces and then are eaten and they make more Now he’s on a medication for his URI (which he doesn’t cough or sneeze much anymore thank god!)

His poops are still a little mucousy but round. They are all different sizes today which is better than tootsie roll shaped yesterday I suppose. Also he is eating and drinking normally so I’m happy. He is still playful.

He is on Sulfatrim (butterscotch ) and albon (cherry); he likes both flavors.

Lucky he likes his medicine – makes things easier.
Coccodia is a common parasite. Does the vet want to start him on coccodia med? You might want to contact the breeder where you got Franz and let them know he has this. They can then treat their other rabbits.

Chance used to have coccidia too.she was on that pink stuff i forgot the name but she liked taking her meds.it was stressful when she had coccidia because she gets poopy butt pretty much everyday which i have to clean up and she drops mucusy poops all over which is just too gross.all is fine now though.

The sulfatrim is for coccidia. I looked it up and that’s the best cure for it right now Mine is milky white

Woops! Backwards. The Sulfatrim is for the URI and the Albon is for the coccidia.

Aw thanks! Also he discovered hopping on the couch about an hour ago! I feel like I can read his mind and he was kind of looking like he wanted to look over the couch and see all the kitchen, living room, and front door at the same time so I kept putting pillows there and now he’s happy perched up there looking around! He is also snuggling with me on the couch! OMG it’s a first XD I’m a little worried he’s trying to tell me something though but I’m doing everything I can

Coccidia is very common and treatable in young rabbits. I doubt though that the breeder you got him from is going to treat all 200 or 300 rabbits that she has for this.

                      Vibes to Franz.

It is true that coccidia is very common in rabbits, especially ones from breeders. This is something you could call and let the breeder know, but it’s not guaranteed they will do anything about it. The really sad thing is coccidia can be fatal if left untreated. So if she’s selling other bunnies to people and they either don’t catch it soon enough or do not seek vet care, it’s possible that their buns may pass within the first few months. I’m so glad that you were proactive and got him in the vet for a check ASAP.

Also have you considered getting a carrier for Franz? I suggest a carrier with a top opening. It would be more secure for him and the larger the better – he’s going to be a big boy.

I was going to get him a carrier but he’s really good with just being held! The box was just for him to poop and eat hay in. My boyfriend carried him around and he had his upper body up on the lip of the box looking all around kind of like a dog with his head out the car window I’ll look on craigslist and just sanitize what I pick until then he’s such a good boy! He also likes his harness which is weird. Probably cause it means fresh air and grass! Omnomnom

If you are transporting him to the vet or anywhere, he’s much safer in a carrier and at the vet office where there are other animals. Also there may be emergency situations that require you keep him in a carrier so definitely invest in one. It’s really a necessity.

I’m not sure if you drive, but if so, you really do need a real carrier, preferably one with a top-opening and a top handle. You can use the handle to loop the seat belt thru. If you need to stop suddenly or are in an accident, this is much safer for Franz. Some dogs will try to get at a rabbit, and if there is such a dog at the vet’s office, a cardboard box would not stop an attack.

Definitely get a carrier. Safer for him.
