I’m glad to report that Miss Olivia’s sore hocks seem to be on the mend. We went to vet (her, me and Bindi) last Thursday and the vet was pleased that they were toughening. No more meds, just Derma Gel on her hocks daily. I was worried about Bindi’s ears…again. Vet said they looked red so we sent away a culture. I should get the results in a day or so. I’m pretty sure they are infected because one of them is a bit stinky. I just can’t keep his ears free of infection! It’s so frustrating. That was a nice vet bill, 2 rabbits and a culture. The culture alone costs around $70.00 plus courrier to Prince Edward Island.

He’s also having problems with his sore hocks now. Sometimes it takes all my might to not scream in frustration!

        Vibes???

Poor Bindi- his ears have been worrying his Momma way too much.  Glad to hear that Olivia is doing better.  And I hope that Stormy is staying out of trouble!

*Hugs and vibes* My bunny has sore hocks too, one of hers is mending nicely and the other is still looking a bit pinkish, so I know your current frusteration.

Oh dear…not Mr Bindi Loo again! ((((((((((((((((healing ear vibes)))))))))))))))))))

We can trade vibes…Jenna’s inner ear on her right side is a little frostbitten from our lousy cold weather.

Good to hear Miss Olivia is in better form!

                          Vibes to Bindi and Olivia.

I have a friend who also has a REW holland lop and you know now that I think of it, he has had these terrible ear problems for the past year that she and her vet have been trying to cure. They’ve tried EVERYTHING – baytril, pen-g, etc…I think she is now trying an anti-fungal cream or something. I’m not sure Dickens has exactly the same ear problems as Bindi but if you’d like I can put you in touch with her – just PM me.

Good news about the ear culture. Yesterday the vet left me a message saying that the result was negative for bacteria. The only problem is I forget which ear she culltured and the other ear (I think) had a funny smell the other day when I was cleaning it. I will call her on Tuesday when she’s back in the office to find out which ear it is. As for sore hocks, I’m just treating them as needed from day to day. Some nights I put cream on them if they are real red and puffy. Olivia’s are looking pretty good, getting nice and hard.

                                Thanks for all the Vibes!!!

                                  I understand your frustration.

Cotton and I have been going thru lip  ulcer for  nearly 2 years.    Very frustrating.    I have faced the fact that it won’t go away and just do the best we can in keeping it under control.

Hopefully those ears will be ok.

You know my Mom when I had show buns when I was little,   she would put gentian violet in their ears when they had ear troubles.   It will dye everything purple.  Stain your clothes too.   It eventually fades off skin and ears.

It is a strong anti fungal.   Mom had this book at that time that discussed these unconventional remedies.

By the way ….   it never cured Cottons lip.

Glad the foot is looking better.   Do your buns immediately start licking off the medicine?   Just wondering

I have been to vets that have been unable to diagnosis Chacha’s ear problems. Now I finally got an answer after visiting 2 vets.

Bunnytowne- after I put ointment on their feet I let them run in the living room for an hour to make sure they don’t lick it because they do try to get the “icky” off their foot as soon as I put them down. I have to keep them busy.

Brought Mr. Bindi Loo to the vet on Tuesday. He does have another ear infection in his left ear. She said it’s very mild and prescribed drops. I just worry that his ear infections will start to resist the treatments because he’s been on everything at least once. He goes back in 7 days for re-check.

Just got back from the vet for Bindi’s recheck. Bad news. Both ears have bacteria in them……grrrrrr. She prescribed Baytril ear drops for 10-14 days and then recheck. The poor guy. Going to the vet so often is really stressing him (and me) out! She recommended I try not cleaning them at all for the 10 days. I was on a schedule where I cleaned his ears 2x a week with a wash solution which the vet thought was a good idea. Now she’s concerned the washing so often is irritating his ears and making them more prone to infection.

Some carpet can cause sore hocks on rexed bunnies. How are their hocks now?
I do believe Bindi’s ears are out of balance in terms of their ph levels. Ear-cleaning is a two-edged sword: you need to do it but it can also exacerbate the problem.

What kind of wash are you using now, LPT? I’ve been given a ph balancer to keep Jenna’s ears in check and just realized it’s the same thing they gave me for Fiver….Keto…plex…somethingorother.
The first vet who saw her was having me put steroids in her ears…couple that with the EpiOtic and she was so red and sore I couldn’t get a cotton ball in there. But I do wonder if it was something she ate that started the whole thing.
What’s Bindi’s diet like now? Where is he spending most of his time? Is he laying his ears down anywhere that could be irritating/contaminating them?

Good point. What pellets are the on LTP? There was a thread about some things in pet foods that cause some health issues. Allergy was one of them.

Petzy- Olivia’s hocks are perfect now. All hard and light pink. Bindi’s don’t look too bad right now either. I bought them each a snoozi pad which is like a faux fur pad to line a dog crate and it seems to have helped quite a bit. They love their snoozi pads.

Mimzmum- I was using Aveena Sativa ear wash. I’m thinking stopping the cleaning will help lessen the bacteria growth because he has these big gobs of wax in his ears and I use the wash but it never really gets anything out and it just adds that much moisture that bacteria loves. I’ve been using it for a long time and the vet thought it was a good idea but now we’re both saying “Okay, something must be causing these infections” so I’m really hoping cutting out the cleaning will help. I’ll see in 10 to 14 days.

JerseyGirl- they eat Martin Adult Timothy pellets. But a very small amount, only like 1 TBSP per day.

I would question whether food allergies would cause problems with ears…would that be a symptom? I can understand the cleaning where the moisture remains in the ear though.

Thats all I kno wabout food allergy and pellets.    Mine hate Zupreem and didn’t make any difference with Cottons lip so they get Oxbow.

On the pellets, it came up a while ago in a thread Furface began. About some ingredients in pellets (and many pet foods). I only noted it recently when another member revived it. When I looked up the 2 ingredients, one did list allergies as a symptom. I’ll have to find thread to clarify.

My thought on this is that some foods can overload the system and so the immune system doesn’t work it’s best. So it’s not the exact cause but can exacerbate existing ones. This is just from my own interest in some “alternate” therapies. Many naturopaths encourage coming off wheat and diary in our diets to give the body a break. I also think that some ingredients/additives directly cause allergy. (We know rabbits are sensitive. That’s the reason they are selected as lab animals.)

All hail the Queen of Bad Luck!!!! I should have knocked on wood when I said Bindi’s feet were pretty good lately. I’m in a habit of checking them every other day, every day when they seem problematic. Last night I checked them and one of them is really red and looks like a deflated balloon. I e-mailed the vet to see what she recommends. I’m bringing him back for the ear recheck in a little under 2 weeks so I would like to wait to bring him until them. His feet are weird though; They sort of go through phases, good, bad, not so bad and I check and treat accordingly but they haven’t been this bad yet.

I suspect the culprit is due to the little condo shelf I made him. It’s got faux fur on it and he loves to sit up there but he jumps down (one cube level) and since that’s the most recent change to his cage, I assume it’s causing the sores. I’m going to dismantle it this morning and see. I hate to, though, he loves to sit there, but I have to find out if that’s the cause.

I’m so frustrated with all these animal problems! I just had the horse vet out yesterday to check Winnie. She developed a huge lump, like the size of a volleyball on her belly and I was freaking out. I thought it was an ulcer. Turns out it’s just a hematoma and she will be fine. I was so relieved to hear that. That freakin horse is already costing me $$$ because of her metabolic problem. Sigh….they are all worth it though. The stress and the money.

I’m really hoping for good news as it’s going to be hard enough at the vets because I have to pick up Nefera’s remains while I’m there. I find that part extremely hard.
