Do you guys use anything special or have a certain method to keeping veggies fresher longer?  I keep them in the crisper, or course, and do not wash them until I’m ready to use them.  After a couple of days they don’t look so healthy.  What do you guys do?

I like bagged and sealed lettuce so no water touches em til I’m ready. The water causes the lettuce to wilt.

I’m pickyicky when it comes to lettuce.
There are also green bags for veggies… forgot the name!

I mostly buy Italian Parsley and Cilantro. When I get it home I remove the ties and spread it on a paper towel and remove anything that looks wilted or discolored. I place the paper towel with the veggie in a vegetable storage bag and put it in the crisper. I do not wash them until I am ready to feed bunny. They seem to keep really well for up to a week, sometimes longer. I reuse the bags several times. I think the paper towel helps keep things fresh by absorbing excess moisture. The romaine lettuce I use seems to keep for 2 weeks, the bags have a use by date on them.

If you have a look under the heading BUNNY INFO/Diet above, there is a link to a forum discussion that is full of different ways to keep veg.

I have the habit of going to the supermarket every other day (if not every day.) I had this habit before I got Bun-Bun, as a vegetarian it’s important to keep fresh veggies in stock. It’s good to have certain things that stay fresh long (root vegetables, certain cabbages and lettuces, celery, etc.) But vegetables should be eaten as fresh as possible, and in the supermarket a lot of times they’ve been in storage for days (or longer) already. So as impractical as it is, I think it’s better to go to the supermarket a few times a week to keep your produce fresh. Then when it’s at home, keep it dry and cool. It’s easier to keep an eye on the veggies when you eat all the same ones as the bun, which is what I do. If it doesn’t look good enough for the bunny I don’t eat it (and vice versa!)

We’ve been using rubbermaid produce savers that keep the veggies off of the bottom so that they aren’t in contact with extra water and have a few small holes to help keep a little air moving. They surprisingly work pretty well. Though they seem to get overloaded and no longer work if there’s standing water at the bottom. So we keep dumping that out each use. I’m not sure if this is the best possible way since we still wash a couple days worth at a time, but assuming that our boys haven’t eaten it all yet, romaine, kale and parsley (regular and Italian) seem to last for over 4 days and the parsley seems like it could go much longer though it never gets the chance.

We oddly enough have a phyto plant pathologist (the study of the death of plants) on call…Steph’s dad. If you want, we can check for tips.
