Ive become a bad bunny owner!!!

Marley is fat!!!!! At least i believe so. She has the biggest belly ever!! Shes a 9 month old dutch rabbit and weighs around 5 to 6 pounds.

        Is this normal?

I just kind of fill her bowl with pelllets everynight and then a little bit more in the morning with veggies and unlimited hay. My boyfriend says i feed her to much!

Is she really fat? If so what should i do to get her on a diet?

Well, it doesn’t sound like you really know what her weight is.

I would never just fill her bowl – you need to measure out the pellets – she should be getting 1/4 cup for up to 6 pounds daily, not just filling her bowl.

I would slowly decrease those pellets you are giving her – why don’t you measure how much it is that you normally fill her bowl to see how much you are REALLY giving her. The Dutch rabbits weights vary and I don’t think 5 or 6 pounds is overweight for this breed – my Dutch rabbits weigh in this range.

That being said, you need to measure the pellets you are giving her.

Are you feeding her alfalfa or timothy pellets? And what kind of hay? At her age, she should be eating timothy pellets and hay. She should get unlimited hay. You can start trying to slim her down by reducing her pellets. You could start by just skipping the pellets in the morning and then start reducing the amount she gets at night. She may act like she’s starving, but she’s fine as long as she has plenty of hay.

The weight range for dutch is 3 1/2 to 5 1/2 pounds. If you think she needs to lose some weight, then work on reducing her pellets as if they are getting plenty of hay and greens everyday, they don’t need as much pellets. But it’s very hard to get rabbits to lose weight so it may take some while to see results.

I want to add, don’t always go by what the recommended breeders weight is too – most of our rabbits are mixes anyway so weights can vary greatly.

That is a lot of pellets… what kind of pellet is she on? Timothy or Alfalfa? If alfalfa, I would suggest switching tto Timothy. Also, SLOWLY decrease intake of pellets. Pellets are very very concentrated. Some rabbits will inhale their pellets, and if they finish, they act like they are starving – that is not the case. That is why there is hay they can fill up on.

Definitely alot of pellets. My dutch Moose is 4 pounds, and gets about 1/8th of a cup of pellets a day now.

Breed standards are not a good way to determine if a bunny is overweight.  Each bunny is different and your bunny may not have been breed to breed standards (not shown) or just not developed to breed standard.  You should ask your vet- hands on is really the best way to tell.

My female dutch weighs 4.2 pounds last check a few weeks ago, and I think up to about 6 pounds is healthy depending on how large their overall body gets. She gets 1/4 cup of pellets per day, free choice hay, 2 baby carrots, and some munchie veggies like lettuce or parsley a few times a day. When I got her four months ago she weighed 3.7 pounds, so her diet seems very good for her as she doesn’t have added weight but is definately a healthy size. I would suggest measuring her food, I put a measuring cup right in her container of food and leave it in. You seem to be feeding too many pellets, my vet said that pellets are very high in calories, and those are probably is what causing the big belly you are seeing. Hay should be priority food, pellets are supplemental for vitamins and minerals and such.
