Does anyone feed their rabbits dried carrot tops? Petzy, I think you’ve said about them before. I did this a while ago and they seem to like them, Rumball especially.

I now have a huge bag of fresh tops (thanks Mum!) so I’ll be drying some. I’m wondering how long they keep like this? Same as hay?

Also, should I take care in how much I feed in the dry form?

IF they are dry with no dampness they should stay good a good while.

Like when you dry mint or basil.   How much to feed.  Not sure but I would give mine a whole top of fresh green ones.  They loved it.

            Thanks BT.

OK, i’ve had to bump up the thread as now I have a 2nd garbage bag full of carrot tops and have hardly made a dent in the first bag!
What to do? I hate waste. I’ll likely dry them and see how my 2 go with them – little bit at a time? Some of the stalks are double pencil thickness. Could they be used as chewing sticks?

Help! Wish I could share them with all the BB bunnies!  I could drop some in at the rabbit rescue. That’s actually closer to my parents then I am. Should have had Mum sent them direct there.

I don’t see why you couldn’t use them as chew sticks, but I’m wondering how you’re going to get them to dry?

I think it’s a lovely idea to drop some at the rescue – there is only so many carrot tops two buns can inhale.

I’ve done them in the oven before, on a low temp (100C ?) for a good while then let them stay in with the oven off overnight. Similar to how you’d do herbs I guess. I don’t see why you wouldn’t be able to hang them up in a dry, dark &ventilated area to dry naturally. I’ve done this with weeping willow before.

So many carrot greens! I am envious. I think they are high in calcium so feed like herbs not like hay.

Yeah, I have to think that upside down in a cool dry place and they would dry out naturally. I am doing a last cut of lavender, rosemary etc this weekend, and I just use sturdy thread to bind the ends and hang!

I would like to find a place that has carrots with their tops!

I had carrots in the garden as a kid and they looked like bushes with only a little bit of orange rofl

Lintini, one of my grocery store chains (Publix) has a separate section for fresh and for organic vegetables. They stick the carrots with the tops attached in a high corner of the shelf, but I find them. Many stores are finding it’s worth cashing in on the trend to healthier foods, so keep your eyes peeled. (and your carrots, lol.)

I LOVE that you are bringing your dried tops to a rescue, Jersey! I also wish you could send some to bb bunnies. Guess they’d crumble in an envelope….from Australia….(carrot dust?)

hehe. Yes, I don’t think they’d travel well.

I didn’t take them to the Rescue as it’s a bit far away to go mid week. I do have some other non perishables I’ll drop there sometime/ Mum might even have another bag of stuff by then! I put carrot seeds out at home and nothing came up. I did not inherit my mothers green thumb!

@ Lintini, when you do find a store with carrot tops, ask for any they’ve already chopped off for customers. That’s what I do. With 5 bunnies, you’d be buying way too many carrots just to get the tops.

Seriously. Enough with the carrot tops!

Actually, I am grateful being able to buy less greens while I’m getting this endless supply of carrot tops.  If humans could live on carrot tops alone, my mother could feed the world.

Sight that greeted me when I got home last night. Bag # 3     (sorry bout image quality)

And this today, a plotting rabbit around the corner

I’ve already has her scratching at the cupboards several times. She’s trying to figure out how to get up there. I just pulled her off the table a minute ago. lol. She hasn’t been tempted to get on there for ages.
