Got a question about litter, i went today to go buy some litter for my rabbits and my local petsmart doesnt carry the brand i LOVE so much anymore (yesterdays news). So I decided to go with carefresh, I used it befor but didnt like its absorbency, anyways turns out they didnt have  carefresh but they had carefresh with soft wood shavings,so its a mix of the regualr brown carefresh with wood shavings but doesnt say what kind of wood shavings. Does anybody know if this is safe?, I brought home a small bag since I need to clean both Chomper’s and Zoe’s cage plus change the litter on the baby buns. Is this safe for all of them??

I don’t like Carefresh. I used to use it when I had rats, and I found it way too dusty. However, I thought they used recycled paper? I had no clue they used wood. Does Petsmart carry Feline Pine? That’s what we use, but we buy it at a local place instead of Petsmart. I love its absorbency and the fact that the pellets turn to sawdust after they become wet. It makes for relatively easy cleaning because you can scoop out the poop, then mix the sawdust around with the intact pellets. The litter lasts longer that way. The only downside si that it’s really expensive. A medium-sized bag costs almost $12 here, and it doesn’t last terribly long when you have two messy rabbits lol.

I shop at a Petsmart in Culver City and they no longer carry the Yesterday’s News Rabbit Litter, but they do have the YN cat litter. I remember reading on a post that the Unscented Yesterday’s News Cat Litter is basically the same as the rabbit litter (cheaper too). I have been using it for about 5 months and it seems fine. Petco stores sell the YN unscented cat litter. I just bought a 30 lb bag last week. Wonder if I should stock up on a couple of bags?

As long as it isn’t red wood or have oils in it. Red wood is toxic to rabbits and the oils are bad for the liver. But even if it did have the oils in it since you bought a small bag and you are using it on all the buns you should go through it fast. It shouldn’t affect them. I’ve read that it is prolonged exposure to the oils that can cause liver failure in rabbits. I like the paper pellets. I bought some at Petsmart and I am having good luck with it so far. A lot of people on this site like wood stove pellets and it is safe for buns and also a very cheap alternative to the expensive pet store litter. I am planning to switch as soon as I am out of what I have.

Yes, it is in the cat litter aisle in a light green bag comes in 2 sizes- 30 lb and about 15 lb. Be sure to get UNSCENTED-both kinds are in the same color bag. The cat litter looks exactly like the rabbit litter used to. I really don’t see any difference except price-the cat litter is somewhat cheaper. Three stores in the LA area seem to carry it. PETCO, PetSmart, and a local chain Centinela Feed. If one is out of stock one of the others should have it.

Where can I find these wood stove pellets???? I’ve never heard of that before? I could give that a try since I have A HUGE feeling that Yesterdays News for cats will pretty soon be off the shelf =(

***This is a copy/paste of my response from OhBellaBuns recent WSP thread***

WSP are available at some hardware stores (Lowe’s, Home Depot), agriculture-type stores (Tractor Supply Co.), and I’ve even seen them at bulk chains (Sam’s Club, BJ’s, Costco). Call around and see if any of your local stores carry them. They are typically available in 40 pound bags, at an average cost of $6 per bag. So they are a very, very cheap litter alternative to overpriced petstore litters.

They are only available seasonally, so now would be a good time to start looking for them! If your local stores don’t carry them, check to see if other locations a bit farther away do. In my case, our local hardware store does not carry them (we are in a suburban area), but by just driving about 20 mins away to a more “rural” area, I can purchase them. They are definitely worth the drive!!! We go once a year and buy about 8 bags (for 2 buns) and this lasts us until the following year.

Horse stall bedding is similar and also safe to use as litter. With WSP, be sure they don’t have added accelerant.

Feline Pine is also sold in my local grocery store here (Publix) so the only worry is about pine shavings. I love using Aspen Pellets, from Petco, by the way. And ASPEN shavings are safe as well, so that’s another option. Petsmart will let you return products, so take the new stuff back.
Carefresh was always Spockie’s litter of choice because his feet were sensitive, and I used the white for my allergies, but the fancy mixes and colors seem to be a sales tactic.

Sorry to bug again on this topic, but having trouble finding new litter for my buns So i went looking for those wood stove pellets and couldnt find them so I went back to petsmart and found those other two products some of you guys recommended. Feline Pine and Yesterdays News for cats. Which do you guys think would be better????

So this caught my attention a bit im guessing they are pine pellets, but i wasnt sure if that is safe for bunnies. I can get the 30lb bag for $18 which i think is pretty good.  This is a statement from the product.” Feline Pine naturally neutralizes strong odors on contact, leaving your home remarkably fresh! Our highly absorbent Pine litter binds directly to ammonia particles and locks them away for good. Simply scoop and discard waste daily and you’ll enjoy a fresher, healthier home”  i think this one is pretty cool since it turns to sawdust when wet, but that is what has me a bit worried.

This is the second product, Yesterday news for cats this seems to be similar to Yesterday News for bunnies which I used for my buns but they no longer carry it for bunnies!!! (wonder why)  This is info from the product, (they sell the 30lb bag for $16 at my local petsmart)

                          • Made with recycled paper

                          • Unscented – no fragrance
                          • 3x more moisture absorbent than clay*
                          • 99.7% dust free
                          • Tough on odors
                          • Non-toxic (safe if ingested)
                          • Designed for low tracking
                          • Available in 5 lb., 15 lb., and 30 lb. packages

I bought this yesterday and was so dissatisfied with it. It smells like sewer waste Horrible smell!!! makes me think its made out of sewer waste! i think they replaced Yesterday News for rabbits with this crummy product!!!

I mentioned earlier that I have been using the unscented YN for cats for months-ever since Petsmart in my area stopped carrying the Rabbit YN. I remember reading a post on this website that the cat and rabbit litter are the same. My rabbit seems to have adapted fine and I have never had an odor problem. It works exactly like the rabbit litter. Sorry I cannot give you a comparison with any other brand since I haven’t used any other litter. I hope they don’t discontinue this one. In the previous post above, I mentioned the three stores that carry it; there is a Centinela Feed in the Pasadena area. I try to check for sales and stock up on a few bags.   Another chain did the same thing; stopped carrying YN for rabbits and tried to replace it with something not nearly as good.
