I know bunnies are very smart, but they’re also insanly curious. Are they smart enough to not burn themselves?

Malachi lives in our basement famly room, which gets cold in the winter. Not frigid, just uncomfortable. Because we’re down here nearly around the clock, we have a sealed-oil radient space heater. It doesn’t have a fan and makes no noise. Malachi’s a just a little thing and I’m not worried about him tipping it over (it would shut off if that happened), but it gets hot enough to make you say, “ouch” and jerk your hand away.  You can feel the heat coming off it long before you touch it, and you’d have to deliberatly hold your skin against it (not just brush up) to cause a burn. Malachi’s never out unsurpervised, but we don’t need to watch him constantly. Can he be trusted with the space heater?

I would not use it if the bun can directly access it as my rabbits have stuck their noses on hot radiators and then jerked away – they would have been able to feel the heat beforehand in these cases.

Could you block it off in some way? Nic cubes?

That would make me too nervous, I would try to block it off with the nic cubes or some kind of wire. Not too close to the heater so those don’t get hot as well, but far enough away so he can’t get his little nose on it.
