I want a vacuum that picks up hay and can vac throw rugs too.   That way I can use just 1 vac.

My mom gave me an old old Hoover.  Works great except on the torn spot on rugs it pulls it making the lose end worse.   It is very heavy hurts my back.  But it sucks up hay wonderful.   The attachments suck though.

I have a shop vac I use for hay.  An old lightweight Bissel for the rest.  It doesn’t work all that great.

I dont’ have lots of $ to spend on those Dysons.  I wanted to spend under 100. oo

Have been scouring the reviews of vacuums online but none mention picking up hay.

I hurt my shoulder using that Hoover.  It is a great vacuum but is wide and heavy.  It pulls itself forward which is cool but pulling it back is something else again.

I dont’ want to have to drag around 2 vacuums to get all that I need done.

        Any ideas?

I looked into this too, about the hay. Most vacuums are just not meant to pick up hay. The hay clogs the wand or the fines block filters. The only one to be OK with hay is a shop-vac from what I have been told at a vacuum cleaner store. I don’t use the vacuum for picking up hay any more. I use a slicker brush to pick it up off my carpets, the throw rugs I just beat outside. i have a Eureka Mighty Mite vacuum cleaner that is very good on regular things but not hay. It cost around a hundred and is small and light (it’s a canister one). I can recommend Eureka because they are great with spare parts. Why don’t you check out their website.

We have this vacuum and I have gotten in trouble for clogging the hose with hay, so i have to use our big carpet vacuum that my family doesn’t use anymore. but for other stuff it is great. i just have to tell you my mom did not like this part of the vacuum, (sorry can’t think of the name of it.) so we got a new part instead.

Woweee.   Then I think I will just use that Hoover in the living room where the biggest hay mess is.   I am going to keep it.  I mean it sucks everything up.  Even the throw rugs lol.

I have a Eureka The Boss.   Little thing.  I washed the filter today.  Didn’t know I could do that.  It is a 16 amp.  I dont’ see anything over 12 amps these days.

I dont’ know if the amp  is the power of the machine or just how much electricity it uses.

I never seen this big living room rug so clean b4.

Yes that Eureka works good.  Doesnt pick up poos though.  It might now since I washed the filter.    Will be keeping the shop vac too for the a/c filters n what not.  Those things are powerful with the attachments.

I use a Shark cordless sweeper to maintain the hay mess in my room. A quick sweep once a day to pick up stray hay pieces and poo. I also use it to pre-vacuum and it does the trick easy. You’d still be using an upright vacuum afterward, but the sweeper is so easy. No cord, weighs barely anything, and you can find a good one for less than $50.

Here are some of the ones you can get simply at Wal-Mart as an example: http://www.walmart.com/ip/Shark-VX2-Cordless-Sweeper/11396542

I think us bunny people have very unrealistic expectations of what our vacuums will do. They are simply not made for what we are trying to vacuum. I think a combo of a hand vac, regular canister vac, and a small shop vac is the way to go. I’ve had several vacs since we’ve had bunnies, and there is no perfect vacuum.

You know I was browsing walmart vacuums and saw those sweepers.  Sounds like a great idea to get one of those sweepers.

I won’t have to follow around with a dust pan.       My Eureka the boss 4 years old is 16 amps and all the other vacs I see nowadays are only 12 amps.

I am going to use it tonite since I cleaned the filter.  I will just keep this in the bedroom for the throw rugs n floors.  Use the shop vac for the a/c filter and keep the hoover in the living room to use there and vac the a/c filter as well.  That way I am not lugging all these vacuums from room to room.

That sweeper sounds like a good idea.  I am going to try to see how old and what amps that hoover mom gave me had.  It is the most powerful vac I have ever used.  She got it 15 20 years ago and she got it used as well.

Think  I will just save my $ and get a sweeper.  The appear very light and when we got breadcrumbs it can pick those up as needed.

Thanks for the suggestion.  I take it Dyson doesn’t do hay either lol   Seems my mom gave me a miracle vacuumm . lol.

Honestly I never seen the big living room rug so clean since I have had it.

Well I guess that is the end of the vacuum dilema.  I want those attachments form the pet hair ones but my couches dont’ get hair all over so I won’t bother.  Maybe I can go to the company and order them seperately.  Without having to get the vacuum.

Thanks Rachel! Good to know the carpet sweepers work for this. I’ve wondered about that. It’s harder to find carpet sweepers in stores now.

BT, you may find some Hoover attachments compatible with the vac your Mum gave you. Worth a look.

Oh my! The shark sweeper is the best thing ever for hay! We have gone through three or four of them (a bunny usually ended up chewing the charger cord!) but I swear by them! They are quiet enought that they don’t terrify the bunnies (at least mine) and they really do work so well! I got my newest one about a month ago at walmart for about $30-$40, they had a few models I think I got the cheapest one they had ($30).

Oh, I totally missed that this was an electrical product. lol Is that just to turn the roller? Wouldn’t the old fashioned manual carpet sweepers be just as effective?

Yes. The difference between regular carpet sweepers and the Shark sweeper is that the roller just spits it out into a tray, no tubes, pipes or bags. Once the tray is full you just simply empty it. Just goes right into the tray. The tray is the length of the sweeper itself so it is great for picking up long pieces of hay!

I have the shark sweeper too and I hate it. It doesn’t pick up any hay for me! I have no idea what you guys are talking about, lol. I’ve had more trouble with that vacuum than with any other I’ve tried. I will agree though that it is quieter than a regular vacuum. I just talked about it here: https://binkybunny.com/FORUM/tabid/54/aff/2/aft/111504/afv/topic/afpgj/1/Default.aspx#199750

                              I copied my reply here:
I can’t recommend the shark sweeper. I bought that one last year (for way more than it was listed on the walmart site ). It does ok for small messes and quick pickups. But. The dust cup is TINY and the vacuum does NOT pick up hay or poop – just pushes everything around, including large balls of fur and carpet fuzz that the vacuum makes but doesn’t collect. It’s too small to do my entire apartment (700 sq ft) – I have to stop two or three times to empty the cup. Or rather, the vacuum stops when the cup get’s full. Or when the battery runs down. Oh, and I have long hair and for some reason this vacuum winds my loose hair around the beater brush (rather than sucking it up like every other vacuum I’ve used). I’m not sure if it’s because the beater brush has a smaller diameter than others or because the vacuum has less suction than others, but it literally knots long loose hair around the brush and eventually the brush stops spinning completley. So then I have to use my fingers and a pair of scissors and cut it all out. Blech. Spend a bit more $ on a higher quality product. I ended up having to buy another vacuum anyway.

Weird! I have never had a problem with them! I agree that my long hair and strings wrap around the bristle but I don’t mind cutting it out once it builds up. I have never had the bristle stop spinning on me though?! It picks up hay and poos galore in my apartment! We pretty much have one per room!

These are all great ideas.   Never thought of a sweeper b4 this post.  I also looked at the small steam cleaners instead of mops.  That sounds great for this small apartment.  I dont’ have carpet I hate carpet anyways.

I have a big rug in the living room with small ones on top it here n there.

This sounds great cuz I got lots of bare floor.   Hmm know what I am going to be doing next month.

You know the walmart by my house has more vacs sweepers n steamers than the one in the bigger city.  lol

                                  Go figure

Does anyone have any recommendations for a cordless hand-held vacuum? One of these sounds ideal for quick cleaning around the hay/litterbox area, but how well do they do at suctioning power?
