After the visit to the vet and having Basil cleaned up and checked out and him getting a clean bill of health I forgot to get his tooth the vet clipped so I could take a picture of it and show you guys how long it was!

here is his toofers he got trimmed! he only had one since unfortunatly before I got him he broke off his other front tooth I can see a little it of a tooth so I’m hoping it grows back but if not he can be toofyless on one side! lol

        here is his tooth:

        Yikes huh?

I have a question now I want his tooth to stay nice and short  and not get over grown again but they have been so long and overgrown that he has been use to not chewing on things and Im paranoid that he wont chew to keep his teeth filed down and I hate for him to go through the trauma of getting his tooth trimmed again!  I have a yogurt drop treats that I rubbed on his cool cardboard chewy tube I got him that is covered with herbs and hay for him to chew so he would smell the yogurt on it and chew on the tube it kinda worked he chewed it some so now I stuff his fresh veggies in there so he has to chew on it to get his yummies! lol it seems to work I have a little willow basket Im going to put in there and put veggies in there to help promote chewing. would his eating timothy hay and pellets keep his teeth in check if he never does start picking up on the chewing habbit?

another pic just because he is so stinkin adorable!

Did the vet say why it was overgrown? Is it due to malocclusion (not aligning properly)? Because if that’s the case, nothing you provide is going to help wear down the teeth.

Its not malocclusion thank goodness, it was him not having anything to chew on when he was with the shelter he was in a small wire cage with no toys or anything to chew that was one of my first concerns that it was that problem but now that the vet trimmed them the line up great! he is starting to chew on his cardboard tube now of course after I posted this! lol I just dont think he is one of those destructive chewers! lol

              Pellets won’t do much help.

              But HAY will definitaly
Just be sure he has TONS of hay near him

              Poor baby *hugs*

Well, there may not be a guarantee that this can totally be resolved with this incisors if it caused any problems with the molars too. Hay can certainly help moreso than any cardboard or toys or anything like that – those are mainly boredom busters for rabbits. Hay can help with molars and that is going to be your best bet for Basil.

Did the vet check the molars for spurs as well? Sometimes the overgrown incisors can cause molar spurs as well.

Thanks Sarita for all this great info! The vet did check the back teeth he a had a small spur on a molar close to the front and he got it trimmed and he has got nice smooth no overgrown teeth now yay! I have him in my hallway to my bathroom and he thinks he is the coolet bun ever because he figures out how to jump on top of his box and into the bath tub and jump out again and zoom around haha so funny!

It should be a natural inclination to chew so now that he can, hopefully you’ll see him begin to do it.
He might have to have the opposing incisors removed also if the other don’t grow back.
