I went to speak to the lady here about making ceramic bunny bowls for my babies.  She told me you can get decals to place on them and fire them.  She gave me the book to review and order from

However I noticed  that the cover of both books said   not to get food on the decals cause they contain high levels of lead.  To put them a certain space below the lip of the bowl.

This makes me shy away from doing this.  I can make mugs for me though and not let the tea or coffee touch the decals on the side of the mug.

I don’t want to risk my bunnies health making bowls.  I wonder if the ceramic paint is the same way.

Guess I will have to contact Etzy and see about their bowls and how safe they are for bunnies.

I got rid of my pet bowls from the dollarstore for the same reason. There may be lead in the ceramic paint. My rabbits sometimes chew a little on their bowls too… and I bet it would not take very much lead to affect them.

I would be nervous too. I thought I’d read that some ceramic glazes are also bad for your/their health. I think a little internet research would be a good idea. (like Ask.com or HowTo.com) to read up on safe ceramic dishes. Etsy might have sellers who don’t know either, but you can email them before buying to ask.

Why can’t she just fire up an unglazed bowl without a decal?

I wanted to put their names and some bunny pictures on the bowls.   guess I won’t be doing that.

              Not risking my buns health
