As some of you may know, Stu went to the vet yesterday morning and I just wanted to update you on whats happening with her.
The vet looked at her nose and felt around her cheeks when I explained the noises that Stu had been making with her breathing. She was still making the noises at the vet so he knew what I was talking about. On her left cheek he found a little scab. After feeling arfound it for a bit he said that there was a lot of puss inside and that it was eating into her nasal cavity which was giving her mucus in the nose so she couldnt breathe properly. So He said the first thing he had to do was remove the scab and get all the puss out. So he did that, and then explained about the rabbits puss being far more cheeselike than a cat and dogs, and that I would have to remove the puss thoroughly each day and give her antibiotics daily and also clean the wound with bettadine that he gave me, and said that he thinks that she SHOULD be ok.
The bit that worries me is then he said that he wants to check up on how she is in a week, and to ring if I had any questions He said that if the infection comes back again then (20% chance) she will have to be euthanised because the infection could break her jaw. If she gets better (80% chance) then she will have a pea sized hole in her cheek where the infection/ scab was. I asked if the puss in her nose was going to stop her breathing and he said it shouldnt get any worse, and that she wasnt breathing through her mouth, which is a good sign. So he gave her an injection and gave me all her medicine etc and I took her to work with me in her carrier for the day so I could keep an eye on her.
Today: Shes still breathing really noisily, but the vet said not to worry too much. This morning I got up and cleaned out her wound straight away, it looks good, just like the vet said it should. She had all her antibiotics without a problem, but after I cleaned her wound I noticed she was breathing through her mouth a bit — I panicked and called the vet and he said to keep an eye on her and bring her in if she got worse, but she stopped after about 5 minutes — I must have stressed her out with the cleaning
She went to work with me all day again today. She loves it because she gets broccoli and stuff from my kitchen there. Shes sick of being in her carrier even though she ran arund the shops yard today all day, and so tonight she is back in the pen with her mates Mr Bunny, Flopsy, Rabz and Sparrow. Rocket and Raisin and looking in on her every now and then.
Shes eating ok, running around like normal, but she is still wheezing heaps. I’ll keep you posted on what happens. Please keep your fingers crossed that her appt goes ok for her next week. I couldnt bear to put down my baby Stu
