I’m a bad bunny mum. My buns love bell peppers and apples and I give them as treats and I stupidly let them have a bit of both last night, forgetting they’d had a cranberry each in the morning. I don’t know what came over me, they just looked so happy!

So now we have soft, smeary poop – not full on poopy butt, just a messy litterbox. It’s that long since they had upset tums that I can’t remember what to do – obviously no fruit but do I stop all greens until it’s better too? I would normally, but as I know it’s the fruit will they be better keeping the greens? Unlimited hay as usual but if they’re not getting fresh stuff should they have a few more pellets? Have only given them fresh hay and their usual pellet ration this morning.

Sorry, I know they’re basic questions but I haven’t dealt with upset stomachs since they were babies and the guilt’s probably making me panic a little more than is rational.

my bun loves green pepper too i give it to him a lot. Is there a problem giving them green pepper on a regular basis?

Eyorelop, as long as he has no problems, you can give it to him on a regular basis.

Grumpybun, just stick with the basics like lots of hay until the poopy butt stops – poopy butt doesn’t necessarily mean stomach upset either. It’s an overproduction of cecals.

Thanks Sarita, and apologies for the poop panic. I sometimes lose perspective when it involves the rabbits

Lol- poop panic! You made my night, Grumpybun. I know what you mean- I spend more time inspecting, thinking about and talking about rabbit poop than is normal or healthy… but I’m in good company, right ? My BunBun gets poopy butt from too much banana. I went crazy trying to figure out what was doing it, thinking it was one of the many greens he gets, when it was the most obvious reason all along. Guess that’s why bunnies can only have limited fruit- but some are more sensitive than others. My lop, Nelli, can eat anything… but not BunBun. The good thing is that having messy poops doesn’t seem to cause the bunnies discomfort the way gas does- it’s just kinda stressful for us. And a bit gross to have to clean up too, come to think of it…

Dee, if you’re anything like me you regularly embarrass yourself over rabbits (and their poop) but at least we can sleep at night knowing they’re loved and looked after! Lol!

Lolli gets poopybutt from too many treats. The sugar disrupts their digestive environment, causing the poopybutt. I guess it’s kind of like us – if we eat too many rich foods or whatever, we can have our own poop problems. Sorry if I’m being too gross. Anyways…I just cut the treats for a while and she goes back to normal. And I hate cleaning her butt cause she usually gets some stuck to her fur. It stinks so bad. lol

Yes, the stink is our punishment for giving the bad treats in the first place. bunbuns1, I just imagined if we were pets and had huge owners that examined our…and then dragged us off to the Dr. every time we had too much pizza or chimichangas. How embarrassing.
