I just went to the store today to get more pellets and litter for Dexter.  They now have a new Carefresh littler that is mixed with some kind of wood chips.  I didn’t look to see what kind they were but has anyone else seen this?  Is it safe or not?  I don’t think I would ever buy it, but I am afraid they are going to replace it with the orignal stuff.

Carefresh seems to expand its product line every couple of years. I used it for Spockie – the white one with the low allergen content that we both needed, and softness for his hocks. I haven’t spotted the one you mentioned, but as long as it’s not pine shavings it’s probably OK. Read the label carefully, and “when in doubt, don’t.”

I’ve seen it at the store – I don’t really care for it. It reminds me of bark or even cedar.

I’ll stick to my brown carefresh

I’ll stick to my white, or occasional white mixed with purple or pink We won’t tell Moosie that pink isn’t manly color though, k?

I’ve actually stopped use of Carefresh as I found this was what was causing Fiver’s digestive trouble. I think he was actually eating it. 0_o
Perhaps they’re changing formulas for the basic product too because it hadn’t bothered him to sit in it until the last 6 months or so.

I think it’s still nice bedding (minus the woodchip thing) but it’s just not for Fiver.

I don’t see the point in adding the wood chips to this…you can just purchase those separately. I don’t see this product on their website either but I am noticing that they are selling food pellets for small animals….wonder what those are like.

My bun has been eating the carefresh also, on occassion. What other litter is recommended?

CareFRESH Basic is a new version… it’s the same classic formula, but with dried softwood shavings. It isn’t intended as a replacement for CareFRESH Natural or Ultra, but as a bit of a safer compromise for those who want to use wood.

I’m sorry that your bun had trouble with it! It’s fairly rare for them to actually ingest their bedding… mine chews on it all of the time, but never actually eats it.

What kind of softwood are they? Hopefully not pine or cedar…

I went to Simply Paws, a local petstore. The store carried a small bag of the new carefresh and I didn’t see anything about the ingredients, but I did see some parts of the usual carefresh mixed in with the wood..

I’ve been having a difficult time finding a less expensive litter that my bunns actually like. they like the carefresh basic but my cats are way too inclined to sleep in it. I’ve bought one package of the woodshavings after chatting with my local pet store owner about it and my bunnies seem to like it just fine. They don’t eat it at all and the cats find it less comfortable to lounge in. I’ve also noticed that it absorbs their pee better and lasts longer than the Basic. Unfortunately it makes a lot more mess than the Basic too. I’m not sure if I’ll keep buying this kind or not once the bag is done.
