So my boyfriend cant stand the smell of MArleys pee smell. I clean her cage as often as possible just to keep him happy even though most of the time its unnessasary adn is costing me a lot of money. Just before i started writing Marley peed and my boyfriend went crazy over the smell. she peed in her litter box and everything but its just the initial smell that linger for a while

anyways, while i was at the pet store the other day i saw some stuff that you squirt in the animals water and it will make the pee not smell so bad. Im not sure if it actually works or if its even safe for bunnies. does anyone her use it? or have any solutions to help make us all happy?

ALso i heard of people putting baking soda in litter boxes. Does anyone know how that works?

The product i was talking about is: Marshall Bi-odor waiste deoderizor for small animals. I found it at petsmart

I wouldn’t add anything to the water. Anything that can change something like a smell just isn’t right in my opinion.

Is she spayed? Doing that would be first step if she isn’t. Hormones can make their pee smell bad.

Another thing would be maybe changing her type of litter. What are you currently using? Perhaps your bf is reacting to the combined smell of her pee plus the damp litter. Baking soda would be a bad idea, unless the litter box has a grate over it so Marley can’t get to it. It could harm a little bun if ingested.

Also, I think your bf needs to relax a bit. Human urine smells a heck of a lot worse

Personally, I am really not keen on these water additives.  I don’t think they’d even work on rabbit pee which is slightly alkaline.

Ditto, what type of litter are you using? There are some that are cheap and really good with odour control. One thing I do is have a small bowl of vinegar in the room and it really helps absorb any smells.

Aside for hormones, some veggies can make bunny pee smell too.

Just dittoing the advice already given. Some litter does nothing to absorb urine and mask odor. We use wood stove pellets (kiln-dried pine pellets) and the absorption is great and there is no urine smell at all.

Water additives are a bad idea. First of all, they probably won’t work. Second, there is a chance they might change the taste of her water; this can cause her to not drink enough, resulting in other bunny health issues.

Remind us if she is spayed. And do you know for a fact she is a girl? Typically, it’s the intact male urine that smells REALLY bad, very musky.

She isnt spayed. I thought about doing it a few months ago but the best vet around here costs 500 dollars to do it and i found one vet for 90 but it seemed not to be the best vet.

I hope shes a girl!! I got her when she was 7 weeks old and was  told she was a girl. When i took her to the vet, they never said anything about!

I have been using yesterdays news. and i like it. It doesnt have a smell which is good for my boyfriend. Im not really sure if its absorbing the smell or not. I always thought you werent alowed to use pine for bunnies because of the smell?

Do you guys have any good ideas of different litter?

i think getting her spayed would be the best idea to solve this – you could even ask your bf to pitch in because its him that doesn’t like the smell

I think getting her fixed might be the only answer. I used to use YN (before switching to wood stove pellets) and found it to be fantastic for odor control for my fixed bunnies. If it’s not doing the trick, I think it’s just because she has stinky hormonal bunny pee.

I’ve heard good and bad things about YN.  Pelleted pine (wood stove pellets, feline pine) are kiln-dried, so the harmful phenols are eliminated.  Pine and cedar SHAVINGS are not good to use for rabbits.

I can also vouch for wood stove pellets, both my rabbits and my cat use them (yes, it even absorbs cat urine smell!!!) I’ve used Feline Pine in the past too, which is the same idea but a lot more expensive… it does do an even better odor-control job than stove pellets IMO though, just not enough to justify the cost increase in my book I don’t have any experience with YN to compare it to though.

Also, you say you’re spending a lot of money on cleanup, what are you using for cleaning? A 50/50 mixture of white vinegar and water is dirt cheap and neutralizes bunny urine smells very well. Wood stove pellets are also a LOT cheaper than YN so that would also save money. I agree with the other posters that a spay will help you out the most, but in the meantime if you can cut cleaning costs it might soften the blow of the vet bill!

I cannot repeat it enough. I love Care Credit!! You can find it online. Applying takes like 10 minutes. I have a $1300 line of credit with them, which helps tremendously with 3 cats and my bunny. Then you can make payments over time. The first year I believe is interest free even! Then, you just go to their website and look up vets in the area and find one that is qualified for rabbits and takes the Card.

My boyfriend also can’t stand the smell of my rabbits ,and I clean their litterboxes everyday and it was really hurting my money buying special litterbox absorbents. I was introduced to woodstove pellets …and then I didn’t stock up and the stores didn’t carry them over the summer!!! So I tried out a 40lbs bag of Yesterday’s News. It was alright, didn’t mask any odors. So…then I slapped myself. I basically bought newspaper in a pelleted form? Now I just use plain old newspaper and change it as many times a day I need. We have a ton around my house and if I am low I take the old paper from work home. I also fill up half the box with hay. The entire bale cost me 20 bucks…well I guess the last one was free since my bf bought it for me ….I guess he doesn’t think the buns are THAT bad. Woodstove pellets are also very nice – I like them a lot but the newspapers are working out for me now, and the buns like ripping it up too so that’s an added bonus rather than digging and flinging woodstove pellets everywhere. lol

Check out your local humane society for low cost spay/neuter vets around you. Just zip a email over their their spay/neuter director and they can send you a form and get you in touch with the closest one to you. That’s what I have done. I pay 70$ for male, 100$ for female. My vet charged extra for the meds for females, it wasn’t expensive.
