The topic of rap music came up in another topic. i’m just curious what your oppinions are on different genres of music. not just rap but any genre. what do you like, what dont you like? what do you belive has a positive or negative impact on youth or adults?

i found that in many studies metal and raop actually dont have much of a negative effect on teens. Socioty belives that rap and metal have a negative effect on teens mostly because thats what the “bad kids” listen to. But instead they show that its actually not all bad, and non-violent rap songs are more likely to make teens feel depressed than any other genre – i must say that one suprised me.  Mind you, one of the things that was mentioned was the impact on females – It tends to make them more accepting and open to bad names and sexual abuse. This i can agree with. Almost being raped myself  – by a rapper for that matter -  i really didn think much of it. I know what he tried to was wrong, but other than that it doesnt bother me much. –  Here are two different replies to an article asking the obvious question “does watching and listening to rap music vidio’s have a negative effect on youth?”

” i think that watching and listening to music videos does have a negative effect on teens. now a days most teens go by what they see on television. they see these rappers and singers and just began to idolize them. they admire all the money, clothes and jewelry. they expect to be able to have those things. a lot of boys i know claim that they want to rap to get money like the people they see on television.you see most teenage boys getting involved in gangs, violence, and selling drugs. you hear them talking about new trends and money that they have. most boys i see argue over who the best rapper is and how they want what that rapper has. others will talk about a set of lyrics and how good they are, when most lyrics talk about guns, drugs, and money. the females on the other hand in my opinion have it way worse. in videos you see these pretty girls with nice bodies who is either half naked or shaking their behinds. most of those video girls are probably still in their teens. now i admit i enjoy most of the music videos on television. but i feel that it should either be a limit to what is put in the video or how many teens watch the videos, because some videos can be good and others can be fatal.”

        – Alysha Garner

” I believe that if anything has a negative effect on teens, it’s the news. While some music may be viewed as vulgar, violent, or demeaning to certain races, or sexes the majority is inspiring. Imagine a teen sitting in his/her room after just having broken up with their girlfriend/boyfriend and listening to a song about the same situation. That music could very well be an inspiration to let that person know “hey it’s not the end of the world”. Music let’s people know that they are not the only one’s feeling whatever it is that they are going through. That type of support is crucial to anyone’s existence. As far as the video aspect of this topic goes I also don’t feel like it has a negative effect. Watch the news for 4 minutes, which is about the average length of a music video, death, disease, war, kidnappings is that what you’d rather have your teen watching? Didn’t think so. So if you’re one of those types who limits your teen to what type of music they listen to or video’s they watch than heed my warning, you’re not limiting the negativity in their life, you’re limiting their inspiration to live life. Don’t suffocate them with what society has fooled you into believing what is right and wrong. Instead, challenge them to make their own decisions, choose their own likes and dislikes and ultimately become their own person.”

        -Lawrence Votee

I think they both make solid points. What are your oppinions?
not just on rap but on all genres of music.

I listen to alot of metal, some better than others. Mostly old stuff however. Alot of the new stuff makes my ears hurt lol. Give me some old Megadeath or original Metallica any day thanks.

Hiphop is… iffy. Most of it I cannot stand. Alot of it is just mindless yelling about doing drugs, hating cops, having sex, etc etc. Some is decent, but it certainly isn’t high on my list.

I personally don’t like alot of the messages in today’s music, which is why you never find the actual radio on. I always have a mix of my stuff playing on cd int he car, or streaming from my computer to the xbox to the surround sound at home. Even the rock and pop are changing for the worse, in my opinion. So hard to find good music these days

It isn’t the music that makes people do bad things. Some people are just wired funny, and people use the metal/rap music as an excuse, something to blame besides the kid, or the parents for not teaching the kid. And I sure as heck am not more accepting about being called bad names, or being abused. My mama taught me that I am better than that, that I am to hold my head high and defend my rights to be who I am, not what some guy says I am. That lesson really hits home when something is taken forcibly that can never be returned, let me tell ya. I hold my head high to this day, and God protect he who tells me I am less than what I make myself to be. *hugs for my mommy*

Anyway, point is, some music is bad, other music is good, its all in what your tastes are. I’ve known some bad people who prefer classical and country to rap and metal, and some awesome people who prefer the metal to the melancholy. *looks at hubby hehe* I just don’t like hearing the nasty stuff sung about, personally. Give me truly lyrical, rhythmic bass-heavy music over yelled out crap anyday.

And that is my 2 cents

            Cool thread!

And MirBear, I had no idea you almost went through such a horrible experience. I can’t imagine what that was like for you. We’re here for you if you ever want to talk about it.

And now I’m gonna leave you alone about it!

My favorite types of music are jazz, classical, world music, Pink Floyd, and soundtrack scores. I love all types of jazz, from bebop or classic New Orleans jazz to modern day funky stuff. As for classical music, it’s the same thing… I love many types all across the spectrum.

As for soundtrack scores… it really interests me how composers nowadays use their music in movies and games. Most of the really well-respected games these days have orchestral scores written by professional composers, and I have heard some video game music that has touched me deeply. Also, I love to discover which movie directors pay attention to their scores, and which have the regular-old symphonic background stuff that doesn’t do much to enhance the film.

Sofia Coppola (Lost in Translation, Marie Antoinette), for instance, always has absolutely fascinating movie soundtracks, and the songs always fit with the scenes, even though they seem randomly jumbled together in list form. Wes Anderson (The Royal Tenenbaums, Rushmore) also uses music incredibly effectively in his films.

As for orchestral movie scores, I adore the music from films like Amelie, Coraline, Pride & Prejudice, Dead Like Me (done by Stewart Copeland, who was the drummer for the Police too, lol), and many others.

With game scores, I love the music from the Elder Scrolls series, Dragon Age: Origins, and even WoW. Most people turn off the music and listen to other things while they’re gaming, but I enjoy listening to how the music relates to the game.

One of my favorite bands is called Beirut, an indie band that started off taking its influences from Eastern European and Balkan folk music, and has moved on to elements from French culture and even Mexican funeral bands. The lead singer and starter of the band, Zach Condon, has one of the most beautiful and haunting voices I’ve ever heard.

Check out their band and hear some of their music at their website – http://beirutband.com/

            And that’s me : P

Lizzy, I listened to a few of those songs and they are pretty good. Postcards from italy was my fav i must say.

and as for my expirence, it only happened a few weeks ago while i was babysitting – i babysit for an old friend of my older sisters. she used to babysit me when i was little and now i babysit her 10 month old daughter. – her boyfriend (the father of her daughter) is a local rapper and he had a friend over for the night who he has known since grade 8 and well his friend got a little drunk and the story goes on.. but i didn’t think much of it. i really dont feel much different, but i am deffinatly more accepting of it than most of the people i know would be. i still know its extreamly wrong and he shouldnt of tried to do what he tried to do but it doesn’t phase me. Thank you for your kindness though, and its really nice to hear that there are people who would be so kind as to listen if i wanted to talk about it.

Monkey – there are a few hip hop artist that i really really like because they dont just sing about drugs money and violence. ne-yo and usher are 2 of my favs. ne-yo is very respectful of ladies and i respect that about him. eminem i really love listening to because for the most part he actually raps about life. if you can get into his lyrics hes a bit easier to understand. listening to eminem has helped me through some extreamly difficult times with family friends and myself. one of the big things that inspire me about eminem is that he faced an addiction and it makes me belive that my sister can overcome her addictions.

i have a pretty messed up family

I dont think music has anything to do with how people behave.. country music hardly gives bad messages, but ever been to a major country music festival? I have, its a hotbed for rape, drugs and underage drinking, but I dont see people throwing a fit over kenny chesney lol it has nothing to do with the music, its the PEOPLE listening.

I like a lot of things. Except Country (my mom is swearing at me from heaven for saying this, sorry mom) and rap. I can’t stand it. I will NOT tolerate it.

I am the type that is convinced that parents should monitor their children on what they watch and do for entertainment. Media and Television do play a big role in how children see things.

I like a lot of things. I’m like my friend, she has over 1,000 songs on her IPOD, from year 1400 til present

I don’t believe music affects who you are. I’ve seen proof that it doesn’t.

When I was a little kid, like 8, I loved Guns N Roses and Poison. I bought an issue of Metal Edge every month and had long haired rockers all over my room. I still like the same music. My parents probably were a bit concerned at the time but they let me listen to what I liked. I liked Metal and Rock, my sis liked New Kids on the Block and other teeny bop stuff. I turned out pretty decent and so did my sister. The trouble I did get into as a kid certainly wasn’t caused by the music I listened to.

My BF loves really hardcore metal. He’s always loved bands like Marylin Manson, Cradle of Filth, Disturbed, etc and he’s the sweetest guy I could ever imagine. He even likes a band called MurderDolls who sing about pretty terrible things, but it’s just music. He doesn’t smoke or do drugs or even drink. I had a friend who was a ballerina and loved classical type music. You’re typical pretty in pink type of  good girl. She ended up with a criminal record and in rehab for hard drugs by the time she was 18.

Personally, I like most music except Country and Rap (I’m with you there, Brittany!). I mostly like rock and bluesy type music. Once in a while I’ll tolerate some dance/pop songs. But most of the stuff on the radio (Lady GagGag etc) is just junk IMO.

totally agree, often times people equate behaviour to music..but it should be the other way round..often times a certain person who happens to be a bad person likes a certain kind of music..ther people fall in with that PERSON and end up listening to that persons music, weather they like it too or weather they just wanted to fit in. the music didnt cause the bad behaviour, the PEOPLE did. I listen to punk, I read thrillers, and love researching death, murders and executions…why? because I ENJOY it. I am not punk, goth or emo and never have been..I am the “goody goody” type in fact, bright and bubbly lol

My cousin, Brian, loves what I like to call “angry” music… extremely loud and raging.

But he’s like mild-mannered Clark Kent! Sweet, kind, quiet…

                          Cracks me up, actually.

                            ^^^^
I got into those in grade 7-8, loved them since, i often forget about the music i like because i hget so raped up in the newer music. I really do love rap and R&B those i must say are favorites, but i enjoy the heavy metal, country, ect. The only thing i dont like is classical and some reggae. I do agree with jenny rabbit, my music preferences are deffinatly curved by the crowd i hang out, but then again i guess thats how were introduced to new mucic. If nobody shared music how would we know of any other types?
