This is terrible. I went down for lunch today, saw one of the cats at the back door (indoor cats we let out for a couple hours each day). Opened door to let her in, heard other cat YOWLING. I thought one of the bears had got him or something. Ran up hill of backyard (in PJs and flipflops), tripped on acorns on hill. Follow sound, to the right behind neighbors back fence.

There is a very steep hill/cliff area just over the crest of the steep hill that is our backyard. There is a tree about 12 feet down that cliff/hill. About 30 feet up that tree, with no branches underneath, is my cat.

Not just any cat, a cat who I suspect has some sort of… neurosis. He is afraid of everything, and randomly freaks out. Terrified of strangers, so even if I could get the fire department out,  I’m pretty sure he’d freak if he saw one of them coming and jump. Sigh.

No idea how long he’s been up there – parents must have let them out this morning. They must have been out for 4 hours by the time I found them. Parents not coming home tonight. Cat won’t come down on his own, despite my coaxing for an hour. He tries, looking for a way down, but won’t attempt to shimmy down the trunk. I’m afraid if he jumps he will break something. Sigh.

Currently hoping our painter neighbor gets home to help me prop a ladder up, which hopefully will reach far enough that he will use it to get down. Sigh.

It took 3 people, and someone had to go basically all the way up the ladder, but he’s down. Luckily Mom was able to dart home, as one person holding was not enough to stabilize the ladder on the hill. Determined the cat was about 35 feet up, yuck. Poor Mom is terrified of heights, too, so I think she was about as scared as the cat but was brave enough and a total trooper and got him down.

He has some sore paws (he was on a very small little branch) and must have sprayed or peed while he was up there, because he had crusty butt/tail and smelled. So to add insult to injury, we gave him a butt bath in the kitchen sink. Fortunately for us, he’s good about being held so didn’t fight on the way down the ladder, and was either too worn out or happy to be in our arms and didn’t fight much over the bath either.

I think she’s decided her indoor cats are indoors only from now on – which originally they were, and is probably the best policy. We are surrounded by woods, so while that’s nice for them to play in, and we don’t have to worry about them getting hit by cars, it still obviously can be dangerous. If we hadn’t have gotten him down I’m sure eventually the branch would have broken or he would have fell when he got tired – he was pretty precariously balanced.

I’m so grateful the whole thing is over with. Too much adrenaline for me.

Glad to ehar he is safe and sound.
100% indoor sounds like a good idea Have you seen “Catio’s”? those outdoor cat patio things? Some of them are AMAZING! If I was tio have cats again (can’t allergic) I would make one of those, I know a few people who have some made under a porch and such. Neat way to let cats haev outside time in the sun without the dangers.
