This has been going on for about 3 days (or more)….  A small wild rabbit has made a scrape right next to our driveway.  It just sits there most of the day, leaves in the evening.  I went out to put more trash out just now and got the camera.  I got inches from it!  I got a little closer but it moved it’s legs like it was about to run off so I didn’t get much closer.  It seemed so comfortable that I thought I could almost pet it (but I didn’t because it looked a little scared).  This is a wild bunny right?  I didn’t think I could ever get so close to one.  Maybe it was one of the little ones in the nest and it remembers me?  Kind of silly to think but I just don’t know how it was so comfortable with me.

Here’s a few pictures of it.  And I didn’t even use the zoom, this is literally how close I could get to it!

Wow, what a friendly little guy and so beautiful!
You can’t get near the wild cotton tails around here (and we have a lot) probably b/c they are terrified, beign they get chased by dogs way to often

Do you ever have ur rabbits out in that area?
I found b4 I had a fence a lot of wild rabbits would hang out in my yard after i started letting my guys out there.

They haven’t gone out this year, it was too hot for them. It’s just starting to cool down now. The only one that really likes the outside is Sandy and she goes on a leash (which she’d probably go over to the wild bunny haha!). There’s a nest in our overgrown garden somewhere but I think there’s a nest in the front yard that it’s keeping an eye on. That’s the only explanation I can think of that it’s sitting there the whole day.

She (I’m guessing guarding a nest) was there from when my husband left for work at 8:30am until around 6-6:30pm. She’s been leaving around 6 or so the past few days.

That is one pretty wild rabbit!!! I LOVE its fur!! I think that you must be right about the nest theory, when Zoe made a nest outside all she would want to do is be outside ALLLLL day, she would lay under a mini palm tree there is in the yard a couple of feet away from the area where she had her nest. No matter how hot it was she would go lay under that palm tree and just keep an eye out. She would sometimes chase chomper away, LOL!!! You’re gonna be seeing baby bunnies hopping around your yard pretty soon =)

I love the heads on cottontails – they’re so refined looking.

What a beautiful rabbit! I love seeing the cottontails around my house – they are few and far between but I always feel happy after seeing one. Can’t say the same about armadillos though.

Haha thanks guys! Well a few days ago the bun no longer was showing up so I guess she’s done looking over the nest. Haven’t seen any other wild buns either. Maybe they’re back to the warren for fall…. Guess I’ll have to settle for staring at mine hehe! On a side note, I went to see the bunnies at the shelter where I got Gracie and Sandy and she had a mother and her 3 babies. The mother had been outside for awhile and the woman that runs the shelter thinks the father is a wild bunny! I saw them and the babies (a little grown now) look like wild bunnies. She’s a rex and the babies are agouti colored. The chances of her and a agouti domestic running into each other in the wild are rare. They sure were cute though!

A wild bunny and a domestic can mate? O.O WHAT? I thought it wasn’t possible, Lol. Please prove me wrong The Agouti coloring is simply charming..

Here’s a picture of one of them: http://www.petfinder.com/petdetail/17348091  The only thing I could think of is if she was pregnant and then let out but I don’t know the whole back story.  I tried looking it up online and several people said not possible.  Who knows but they sure are cute!

Not the same number of chromosomes, so no they cannot mate and make young. Unless the rabbit is a domestic feral, in which it’s relatives are from Europe (not America), where our domestic bunny comes from.
