I went backpacking again in the Canadian Rockies.  On the trip we spotted a very large wild rabbit (probably a mountain hare?).  We were at about 6500ft above sea level.  It looked kinda like my Leo, except much bigger, maybe 20 lbs or more.  I didn’t realize there were large rabbits like that in North America?  Does anyone know what species it might be?  Do mountain hares live in the Canadian Rockies??

White Tailed Jack Rabbit I believe they are called.
They are found further up North from where I am. I’ve not seen many in B.C. But i have in Alberta, and yes they are HUGE! lol

I would think a white-tailed jackrabbit maybe, they live in higher elevations too.

hmm, it fits the range. If it was a white-tailed jackrabbit, it definitely had adapted to the alpine climate as it was quite furry/fat and much larger than they normally get. I dont seem to remember it have the scrawny legs of a typical jackrabbit/hare. It seriously looked like a 20lb Leo, plump round and fuzzy :-).

I took this picture when we were living in Edmonton.  It’s kind of hard to tell it’s size from the photo, but that’s a decent sized tree in the front yard that the bunny is napping by.    The first time I saw one it was out by the airport and it was running through a parking lot, I thought it was a dog!  This one is mostly white because it was the beginning of spring and it hadn’t lost its winter coat yet.
