So the dad of the owner of the barn my horse lives at gave me a BUNCH of tomatoes from their garden.  So nice of him!   I’m actually not a fan of tomatoes though so I’ve been trying to use them by feeding them to Zeus.

Right now I’ve been giving him one small tomato every day, they’re about the size of 2 cherry tomatoes.  Kinda football shaped! .  I’m just wondering if tomatoes are more considered a treat, to be given in small amounts, or can I feed a decent amount of them daily, like his greens?

I’m actually really surprised he eats them, but I put them in his enclosure at night and they’re always gone by morning.  And I did check to make sure he didn’t hide them under anything.  So he’s definitely eating them!

Hahaha, just as I post this, I look over and see him devouring one of his tomato slices.  So yes, I now have proof he IS eating them and not stockpiling somewhere in a secret hiding place.

They are a fruit so probably treat the same as fruit. ie a treat. If he’s ok with the 1 a day he’s having now then stick to that. You can always cook them up for a sauce or something… You can skin and freeze tomatoes too, until you’re ready to use them.

HRS says tomatoes are fine for bunnies, but they are put in the fruit category, so like anything else, moderation is key. Can’t you just see a lunch plate with a fluffy green leaf on it, a tomatoe cut like an open flower and a sprinkle of pellets in the center?

              Check, please!

Shh, RabbitPam – if mine hear you they’ll refuse to eat any other way!

I’m going to RabbitPam’s for lunch!

I used to feed grape and cherry tomatos from my garden to some of my bunnies as a treat. Like already mentioned, it’s a fruit so keep that in mind when feeding so that it’s done in moderation. (Just no stems/Leaves they are toxic)

RabbitPam- We’ll be right over! lol

Halo loves her tomatoes (actually I’ve been hardpressed to find anything she WONT eat) Bud has slowly warmed up to them but he used to just stick his nose up in the air and shake his head..

So I have heard that you should remove the seeds of the tomatoes…Are the seeds toxic or is this just as a precaution?

I’m guessing it’s a precaution. Seeds in general are harder to digest for anyone because they can easily get stuck in a digestive tract before breaking down and cause a blockage. (That’s called Diverticulitis in humans.) Bunnies are so small – it’s why you don’t want to buy those treats in the pet stores with bird seed stuff in them. I think a careful perusal of the HRS website might be a good idea at this point. I doubt you need to worry though if they said tomatoes are OK in the first place.

P.S. Must add: family went to a restaurant together last week and we were served an appetizer of fish on huge green leaf lettuce leaves that were gorgeous. Everyone including my aunt offered them for a doggy bag for Sammy. I didn’t only because I don’t think she’d like fish flavored greens, but it was cute to have the family such well trained slaves now.

Mum and I are off to get chopped salad today. I really need a travel case to take Sammy to all these lunches. You guys are welcome to come over.
