Before I tell the tale, just know that we are all okay!
So last night I noticed that Momo kept flopping, getting up, flopping, getting up, turning around, flopping, etc… we thought it was cute! Then it was like, “Why can’t she get comfortable?”
She didn’t eat much of their veggies, but sometimes she takes her time, so I didn’t notice much of that. Plus, she had eaten pellets ravenously that morning.
It was when I noticed heavy breathing that I started to worry. Then, when I offered her a papaya pellet and she didn’t eat it, I knew something was majorly wrong. She always goes banans for them. She just lay there with breathing so fast it was like hyperventilation. And her stomach looked a little… saggy, if that’s the right word for it.
So we called our vet and they referred us to an animal emergency care place. We took her there at midnight.
They took x-rays, which found some weird gas issues going on in her digestive system which could indicate early signs of stasis. They also found some weird crusty spots in both ears that were so small I hadn’t noticed them before (which I feel rotten about). I asked them to check for mites, and they did and didn’t find any, but we’re still going to take her in to see her vet on Tuesday about it.
They gave her some injections, including pain medication, and sent us home a couple hours later with critical care. I put her in an x-pen away from Remy so I could observe her for a while before going to sleep. She absolutely refused to take the critical care from the syringe or from a bowl with little raisin bits in it. The ONLY way she would eat the critical care “mash” was straight from my fingers. Stan thought that was one of the cutest things ever, even though it looked like I was feeding her pieces of cow patty from my fingers.
The things we do for love…
I set my alarm to check on this this morning and she ate more critical care from my fingers, and she had eaten some veggie while I slept and pooped (YAY!).
When I let her out the x-pen, Remy went Alpha Bun Rage and chased the poor thing around the room. So Remy got put in jail (x-pen) for his sins so Momo could relax. He doesn’t seem to mind because he’s eating the rest of her veggies.
What an adorable doofus.
So it was really scary, but Momo is OKAY! She’s acting normal now and playing with her toys. I’ll let out Remy a little later and see if he behaves himself.
I just wanted to say that you all had a hand in making sure I did the right thing. I know that all the knowledge I’ve received from this wonderful place and you wonderful friends over the last year made sure that I was able to recognize that something was wrong VERY early. I didn’t wait until she had stasis before getting her help.
So thank you
