Before I tell the tale, just know that we are all okay!

So last night I noticed that Momo kept flopping, getting up, flopping, getting up, turning around, flopping, etc… we thought it was cute!  Then it was like, “Why can’t she get comfortable?”

She didn’t eat much of their veggies, but sometimes she takes her time, so I didn’t notice much of that.  Plus, she had eaten pellets ravenously that morning.

It was when I noticed heavy breathing that I started to worry.  Then, when I offered her a papaya pellet and she didn’t eat it, I knew something was majorly wrong.  She always goes banans for them.  She just lay there with breathing so fast it was like hyperventilation.  And her stomach looked a little… saggy, if that’s the right word for it.

So we called our vet and they referred us to an animal emergency care place.  We took her there at midnight.

They took x-rays, which found some weird gas issues going on in her digestive system which could indicate early signs of stasis.  They also found some weird crusty spots in both ears that were so small I hadn’t noticed them before (which I feel rotten about).  I asked them to check for mites, and they did and didn’t find any, but we’re still going to take her in to see her vet on Tuesday about it.

They gave her some injections, including pain medication, and sent us home a couple hours later with critical care.  I put her in an x-pen away from Remy so I could observe her for a while before going to sleep.  She absolutely refused to take the critical care from the syringe or from a bowl with little raisin bits in it.  The ONLY way she would eat the critical care “mash” was straight from my fingers.  Stan thought that was one of the cutest things ever, even though it looked like I was feeding her pieces of cow patty from my fingers.

The things we do for love…

I set my alarm to check on this this morning and she ate more critical care from my fingers, and she had eaten some veggie while I slept and pooped (YAY!).

When I let her out the x-pen, Remy went Alpha Bun Rage and chased the poor thing around the room.  So Remy got put in jail (x-pen) for his sins so Momo could relax.  He doesn’t seem to mind because he’s eating the rest of her veggies.

        What an adorable doofus.

So it was really scary, but Momo is OKAY!  She’s acting normal now and playing with her toys.  I’ll let out Remy a little later and see if he behaves himself.

I just wanted to say that you all had a hand in making sure I did the right thing.  I know that all the knowledge I’ve received from this wonderful place and you wonderful friends over the last year made sure that I was able to recognize that something was wrong VERY early.  I didn’t wait until she had stasis before getting her help.

        So thank you

Glad to hear that she’s alright and feeling better now.

Mr. Bunny just had an episode like that about a wee ago. Not too unusual for him – he’s very sensitive and he gets gas at the drop of a hat, especially when he’s shedding. He was better after some gas medicine, force-fed papaya tablets and a good belly massage, but it’s definitely very scary when your bunny gets sick like that.

So glad to hear Momo was able to recover. We lost our Lionhead, Skittles, from a similiar situation. We just weren’t able to get her better. Great quick thinking, you’re a great bunny-mama!

This was my first scare with GI stuff… I was so scared. Thank goodness for my husband who drove me to the animal emergency center. I just sat in the room holding Mo in my arms. She usually hates being held, but she was trembling so much and just put her little nose against my neck and I talked to her and kissed her over and over again.

Monkeybun, I lol’d at “bonk.” Remy’s been in and out of timeout all morning. He finally settled down on his haunches and just stared at me. I swear it was the stinkeye…!

I finally let him out, and he’s behaving… so far.

Nugget, I bet you’re a great bunny mama. As I told Stan on the way over, buns are notorious for hiding symptoms. I was scared about her feeling bad before I noticed!

Glad to hear she’s come good! Having to go thru emergency care instead of your own vet would make it even worse I would think. But it is great we even have such a thing available for our animals. I’ve seen Rumball do exactly as you said Momo did and it’s so odd to see.

I’m just so grateful that we live in an age where bunnies are recognized as important domestic pets… or at least, we’re on our way. I imagine that a number of years ago if we tried to get emergency care for a bunny we’d get a goofy look.

Momo’s keeping mostly to herself. She still only eats from my fingers… I got her to take the critical care and a small leaf of bok choy tonight so far. I’m gonna try and entice her a little later with some more veggies and maybe a few pellets. I wish she would have some hay and water, but I’m gonna watch her and hope for the best. Her breathing looks totally normal now, which is a relief, and she was playing with her toys earlier. I’m thinking that she’s probably keeping to herself mostly because Remy’s been a BUTT today.

                      ><

                        I’m glad she’s ok!

I am currently have some kind of issue with Eddie. He stopped eating yesterday and I’ve been having to force feed him some goop food I made with pellets, fruit, and pedialyte. I have no emergency vet to take him to. We do have a place but they only see dogs and cats. Yeah…nice. He’s been drinking water on his own, so that’s good. But it’s still scary. Especially with it being a weekend.

Oh gosh! I hope he’s okay. Please let us know any updates. Poor little guy.

I think he’s getting a little better. I will be calling my vet tomorrow just in case they are open. Doubt it but have to make sure. I will definitely be taking him on tuesday. His tummy is gurgling more and he’s perked up quite a bit, so I think he’s feeling a bit better. He is peeing where he lays, so I think it might be bladder related but I’m not really sure. He’s had bouts of gas before and he never did that.

Didn’t mean to hijack your post.

Please hijack away. I feel like I know as much as I do because of this site, and people’s personal experiences. It sucks that you don’t have an emergency place that treats bunnies. Couldn’t they at least take an x-ray?

I don’t know if they would or not. When I first got Lolli, I let eddie get too close to her while i was holding her and he bit her cheek. My friend and I took her to the emergency vet and they wouldn’t even look at her. We got told that if she was bleeding, all they would do was stop the bleeding. So yeah…pretty much useless for small animals apparently. Which I do sort of understand because small animals aren’t commonly seen by vets per se.

That’s “crazy” that they wouldn’t even see her! I mean… a wound is a wound… you would think that a vet would be more dedicated to helping animals, no matter how big they are.

Glad to hear Momo’s okay! With these tummy troubles the earlier you catch it the better so it’s good you noticed she was a bit off. Stormy used to get little gas episodes a lot and he would act exactly as you described Momo. Usually a dose or two of simethicone does the trick but we’ve had a couple of late night vet visits as well.

So Remy got put in jail (x-pen) for his sins so Momo could relax. He doesn’t seem to mind because he’s eating the rest of her veggies.

Oh, Remi. You’re so funny and adorable. Isn’t it funny that when kids are bratty it’s just that…bratty and annoying but when bunnies are bratty it’s cute!!!

Ugg… and he’s STILL chasing her off and on. But I’m thrilled because she’s very obviously feeling better. She’s been eating more and more and even binkied this morning.

                                      YAY!
