Hi Everyone,
I wasn’t sure if I should add to my original post “BunBun hasn’t eaten since last night” but didn’t want ppl to hafta read thru everything, so I started a new thread- hope that’s OK.
Quick recall- BunBun presented with symptoms at 2:00 AM Wednesday. Wouldn’t eat, hunched up, hiding from us. Took him to the vet Wed morning- he was admitted to the veterinary hospital with no gut sounds, temp of 95 (!!), Xray showing lots of gas and a large blockage- they said he was critical . They wouldn’t let his wife, Nelli, stay, but I came back after I brought her home and they let me visit him, which I think helped him. They gave him Metecam for pain, subQ fluids and a motility drug. He improved quickly after that, and was discharged to me Wed evening- still not eating but with a temp of 101.3. He began picking at his food that night- he would only eat dandelion greens, alfalfa, Craisins and banana- and his body temp stayed normal. By the morning, he had some poopy bum, and had perked up a lot. I was so upset to hafta drag him back to the vet, but I did. The vet said he looked pretty good, temp was 101.9- he gave him subQ fluids and sent him home. That was Thursday morning. BunBun kept getting better and eating with more enthusiasm, and started producing more poops- it’s been a good, steady recovery. Thursday he was posturing while urinating (his Xray showed some bladder sludge but the vet wasn’t too concerned) but he has returned to normal. His pooping/peeing still isn’t up to it’s usual volume, but it’s gettin there. I have been working nonstop since he was okayed by the vet Thursday morning- does anyone else find that bunnies NEVER get sick on your days off, only when your work schedule is overwhelming busy? My daughter has been caring for BunBun- she’s been amazing, the perfect lagomorph nurse.
It’s such a relief to have him well again- and oddly enough, his wife Nelli seems to have mellowed a lot during this ordeal. When he was at the vet’s, she just lay there depressed, after searching frantically for him everywhere, and she allowed us to pat him and comfort her. She also didn’t need to worry about BunBun running up and scaring her- he is very possesive of his humans, and very protective of his wifey. Apparently this separation has helped Nelli realise that we are not her enemy- maybe we will be able to groom her better now! She still needs to be dematted, but I’m gonna let them settle down for a week or so first.
So thank you so much to those of you who helped me through this . I’ve learned a lot through this experience- I will never give Bunbun too many treats again (although he didn’t get lots of treats before he went in stasis) and will continue to take him to the vet immediately if I notice anything amiss- bunnies get sick SO fast! From now on, I’m going to concentrate on avoiding GI stasis from happening again, and keeping BunBun’s bladder sludge under control. Sorry to write such an endless post- I was just so excited to share the good news! Now that I’ve taken half of everyone’s Saturday up with reading my novel, I will sign off for now
