Since I am bring Hugo home today I need to purchase a carrier asap. I would like it to be big enough that he can sit up, lay down and strech without being confined to the size. It is so hard to judge the dimesions I see online to how big I think he is. Since we are moving soon and might need to take him to Chicago with us (a 3 hour drive). I want to make sure he is comfy but I don't want it to be over kill. I have seen 2 that I was interested in. One the dimensions are 26Lx18Wx16H or 26Lx18Wx18H. The other one was 28Lx20Wx21H. Any thoughts as too if those are too big or too small for a Flemish? Thanks for the help! Amy |

Well larger is better - remember you are going to be putting towels and blankets in it to keep him comfy and maybe some hay since it's a long ride. |

There isn't a big price difference either. I like the one that is 16"H because it has the clips on the side so the top can come off easily. I can't remember how big he really is. So, maybe the 21H would be better...... |

Get one that opens on top if you can - much easier to get them out that way when you need to. |

I'm thinking I might buy both and see which one I want to use when we get that and return the one we don't use. |

I have the petmate - it is a great carrier, my only complaint is I wish it had a top opening. Sometimes it's not a problem to get Koji out, but you have to spin them so their butt is facing the exit to lift them out otherwise it's too easy for them to struggle. Even facing this way, they can put up a bit of a fight. I will say, he can't seem to get his teeth on the holes in it to chew it, so that is a plus. My only other complaint is the locking device is really noisy - of course we use it so rarely it doesn't really matter, but it screeches annoyingly. The ability to easily unclip the top from the bottom for cleaning is great, but its secure enough to hold it together when set up. Someone with bigger rabbits may be able to help as far as size choice goes. I just wanted to share my thoughts on the first since that's the same one I have (although in the small for my 2 pounder). |

Thank you for the info. The night I met him he was going in and out of the small carrier they used for him. So, I don't think getting him in and out will be a problem. He is very calm and easy going. Like I said, I think I might buy both and see what they are like when I get there this evening. Then I can return the one we don't use. It'll be easier to judge the size that way. Now to keep myself busy till 6. Is it 6 yet???? |

Well, that may be true when he's at home, but when you take him to the vets and he's nervous and doesn't want to come out - that is a different story. I give my rabbit the carrier in his pen so he goes into it when he wants, or sits on top sometimes. But he still will refuse to come out at the vets... smart rabbit haha! But I know the top opening kinds are harder to find, and it's workable with the front door. I'd just suggest getting a top door if you can find one large enough and affordable. |

Thanks for the advice. I thought it was weird that he was like that. He wasn't at his foster home. They had to bring him to a pet store near buy and kept him in an office. |

I got my carriers from PetCo... They are great! They are Dog Whisperer carriers, but the stickers come off so no one will know They have a top opening as well as the front door, and they come in lots of different sizes. i swear by em now. http://www.petco.com/product/109125/Dog-Whisperer-by-Cesar-Millan-Top-Load-Travel-Den.aspx?CoreCat=OnSiteSearch |

Those are nice. Thank you. It's a little out of our price range at $60 and the dimensions are a little smaller than I'd like. I'll definitely go look at those too. |

If price is a concern, have you tried bargain shopping on Ebay, Amazon, and Craigslist? I usually find the best prices there. I got my crate off Ebay (new) for half of what it was on Amazon, and probably 30% of what Petco/Petsmart would charge for similar. There are also a lot of used carriers listed on craigslist in my area, in a variety of styles and sizes. I know setting up for a new rabbit is expensive, so save where you can! |

I did check craigslist but there wasn't anything in my area. I'm hopeful to get one at Walmart tonight since my husband gets a 10% discount and it looks like I can get one for about $40. If I wasn't picking him up tonight I would order one. Thanks for all your help! |
